Dead Bodies Smell Really Bad (No, Really, They Do)

One thing you should know about dead bodies;

They smell bad.

Like, really bad.

It's always a good idea to carry something around with you to ward off the smell of dripping cadavers. Anything, really. Yes, even old-lady perfume. (though Gilbert teases me that I smell like Old Lady Harry's Gift Shop, it's a lot better than smelling like a rotting corpse).

So, where were we, exactly?

Oh yeah.

Discussing things.

So, MIST, my school, is basically...A really geeky school. For nerds. I'm intelligent, so I'm here. In fact, nearly everyone in my family attends MIST.

My brothers Cameron and Rhys attended, I'm attending, and the twins, Harry and Sean, are applying in next summer to attend the sixth grade here. I'm a ninth grader myself, and I'll be turning sixteen in a few months.

Until then, though, I'm the 'Kid Kirkland of MIST.'

I hate being the Kid Kirkland of MIST. My dad was in MIST, my grandpa was in MIST, and my mom was in MIST. Rhys graduated, Cameron is currently a senior, and right now I'm the youngest Kirkland in the school right now. I'm the 'Kid Kirkland.' I can't wait until Harry and Sean are accepted, because then they'll be the Kid Kirklands, and I won't be.

So, let's fast forward this a bit with the short version of everything.

I've gone through middle school being a complete loser, and I only applied for MIST last summer. Every year, a thousand kids apply for MIST. And, only seventy get in.

I was glad to be one of those seventy, and while most people applied for MIST when they started middle school, Rhys and Cameron had done so during high school, so I figured maybe I could, too.

I only had one friend those first few months.

His name is Gilbert Beilschmidt, and how he became my friend is a complete mystery.

I was eating lunch on the third day of my first year of the Upper Levels, and it totally sucked. I was eating by myself while Cameron sat four table away laughing raucously and balancing sandwiches on his nose. Really, even without that ridiculous activity, it's hard to miss him--he's got bright red hair, thick eyebrows, and a heavy Scottish accent.

"I thought both of your parents went to MIST?"

Well, they did, but we grew up in various parts of England. Rhys was born on a trip to Wales, and when my mom was pregnant with Cameron, mom and dad settled in Scotland. Life was 'pretty great for those first eight years', Cameron said. Then after the twins were born, mom and dad divorced.

Dad took the twins with him to Ireland, and me, mom, Cameron, and Rhys moved to London.

That was twelve years ago.

Four years ago, they remarried. I met the twins for the first time.

Three years ago, we moved here. Rhys and Cameron applied for the Upper Levels, and got in.

Two years ago, mom died, leaving all of us a horseshoe charm.

Last year, I applied to MIST, and now I'm here.

So I wasn't really expecting anything for my first few weeks here. That geeky, loser kid who hung out in the morgue for fun when his mother was still alive and still did now that she was dead, with the thick eyebrows and the body too slim to play American football...I wasn't going to be anything special.

And then Gilbert came along.

Also a ninth grader, also new, and equally as annoying as Cameron, he sat down next to me, and declared,

"I'm Gilbert, and my awesomeness has just declared myself your new friend."

Now, you should know something.

I spend a lot of my afternoons in a freezing room, where dead bodies lay, mostly from murders or suspected suicides.

I spend a lot of my time inside a cold room, surrounded by corpses. A lot of time.

So I know exactly how they smell.

And that's exactly how Gilbert smelled.

Needless to stay, despite spending so much time around dead people, I felt nauseous once I got a whiff of him. So nasueous, in fact, I turned and threw up on him.

Way to go, Arthur.

also credit to @TheSeerOfDoom for Cameron and Rhy's names. I don't like Harri and Maeve, though, so I've changed them to Harry and Sean.
