CHAPTER 1
"Bethany hurry up I need you to make me some toast!". hollered my seven year old sister Margaret. I drowsily opened my eye's blinking a few times so I was more awake. Sitting up in my bed i stared at myself in the small mirror I had position oppisite of me on my old purple desk. I cringe looking at my shoulder length kool aid dyed blue hair which is a puffy mess, my eyes are open just enough that I can see my tired blue eyes which match the colour of my hair.
"Bethaaaannnyyy!" Whined Margaret from the kitchen impatiently.
"Coming" I yelled out the door. I reach for my thick black rimmed glasses and casted a brief glance at Margaret's digital pink princess clock which read 7:15. Shoot I can't let Margaret miss the bus again.I enter the kitchen to find Margaret sitting at our small kitchen table in her two sizes to small my little pony pj's her blond hair is a frizzy mess atop her head. I walk over to the toaster grabbed a piece of bread for Margaret, a bagel for myself and drop them both in the toaster.
"What kinda of jam do you want strawberry or peach" I ask opening the fridge which doesn't have much food in it.
"Peach please" answered Margaret. Followed by the same question Margaret asks me almost everyday. "When will mommy be home today?".
Our mother has many part time jobs. Our family isn't exactly well off, we live in a small apartment with 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, and a cramped combined kitchen and living room. Even with our mother's multiple jobs we can barely afford to pay the bills and put food on the table. Our mother usually leaves early in the morning and returned late at night. As for are father he's not in the picture anymore he passed away of a heart attack, shortely after Margaret was born.
"I don't know" I answered as I grab the jam from the fridge, just as the the toast popped up. I quickly spread some jam on the toast and bagel and then place the plate of toast in front of Margaret and sat down beside her. We eat in silence. After I take the dishes place them in the sink and then tell Margaret to go get ready for school.
After I finish washing the dishes I stroll into my bedroom that Margaret and I share. Margaret is in the bathroom brushing her teeth. I look threw all the secound hand clothes I own debating what to wear since its the first day of school since summer break. I'm now in grade eleven. I grabbed a pair of jean short shorts, a tight fitting red shirt and a baggy black zip up hoodie. Then I straighten my hair and applied a little bit of mascara and eyeliner. I quickly combed and braided Margaret hair. 7:50 shoot Margaret's bus would be at the end of the road in a few minutes.
"Come on Margaret's let's get to the bus stop" I say urgering her to grab her stuff for the day.
"Ok" replied Margaret chearily grabbing her dora the explore backpack.
After Margaret got on the bus I head home to put my contacts in and finish getting ready for school, just before I left the house I grabbed my sketch book, pencils and, my wallet which contained two hundred and fifty dollars in it I've been saving for over a year and I finally had enough money.
Last year my family was having rough times I helped out as much as I could but without a job or any money I couldn't do much besides watch Margaret. At that time I came up with an idea. Since I was a little girl I'd always dreamt of being a fashion designer I have tons of designs and have tooken a few sewing class' in the past. I'm sure I could make some money to help my mom if I had a dress form and could buy some fabric. So since last year I'd started saving every penny I got and now I finally have enough. I decided I'd going to go to fabricland after school.
I walk to school alone with my headphones plugged into my old blue iPod nano blasting down with webster. Today was the first day of school since summer break and I couldn't wait to see my two best friends. I entered the school and started searching for my best friend Skylar. Skylar was the only person that knew all of my secrets. I found Skylar by the library her dark hair hanging in front of her face as she reading some romance teen fiction book.
"Hey Sky!" I said loudly, which earned me a deathly gaze from the librarian.
"Hey how was your summer?". asks Skylar as she jumps up dropping her book and gives me a hug. We were both on the shorter side I was about five foot six and she was about an inch taller
"Not very exciting I had to babysit Margaret most of the summer"
"No cute guys, secret boyfriends I should know about?" teased Skylar.
"Nah" I replied waving a hand at her. I had never had a boyfriend I'de had few crushes but nothing more."how bout you?""Well there was a really hot guy renting the beach house next to my family's in Mexico but he was from Australia so it never would've worked out." replied Skylar matter of factely. "Hey have you saved up enough money yet for the dress form?"
"Ya I'm actually going after school, do you think you could give me a ride?"
"Sure we'll have more time to catch up than." smiled Skylar happily.
"Great" I replied happy that I wouldn't have to walk.
Skylar and I started walking to our lockers which were right beside each others. All of a sudden someone bumped into me sending my backpack and it's contents spilling out all over the floor and my sketch book falling open to a page full of beautiful short dresses.
"Oh my gosh I'm sorry" says a short girl who has brown eyes that are flecked with green, and pixie cut straight black hair. She looks like she must be a freshman. She started to helping me pick up the contents of my back pack when, her eyes pause on my open sketchbook. I quickly reach for the book and snap it shut.
"Oh sorry are those all your designs" asked the flustered girl.
"Yep" I answered popping the p.
"Wow those dresses all look so beautiful." says the girl.
"Thanks" I replie fealing happy that some one thinks my dessigns are good.
"I'm Luna. Would you ever consider making one and selling it" asked Lusa.
" Yah why do you want one?" I asked the excitement stirring inside me.
"Yay I really like that one dress the short one with one shoulder an a bow in the middle of the sash. Could you maybe make it for me for the back to school dance???" asks Luna staring down at her feat.
"Ya definetly! If you want we can meet up at lunch tomorrow and talk about colors, price, size all that stuff." I say not believing this is happening that some one is wanting me to make them a dress.
"Sure I'll meet you at the library tomorrow at lunch" said Luna giddily.
"Sweet" I say.
