Chapter 4- The Ring

Ciel took it in a much better way than I thought. He came over to me and stared at me, inspecting every inch. He grabbed a strand of my long blue-black hair and examined it. Then he looked at my eyes, the same shade as his. I let him do his inspection, watching him with slight amusement.

"So tell me, if you are my twin," he said, stressing the if, "Why is this the first time I am hearing of you? Mother and Father would have told me if I had a sister." Even as he was asking the question, I knew that he believed I was his twin.

"They didn't want you to worry about me while I was sick, at least that is what they told me," I said, shrugging. "Although I'm not really too sure if that is the truth."

"And why didn't they move you back here when you were healthy again?" he asked.

"I was sick up until I was eight. I was actually scheduled to come home the day after our birthday, but when news reached the viscount, he told me and I ended up having a relapse. By the time I had recovered a year later, I was doubting that they had told you about me, seeing as I hadn't heard a word from you."

"So what made you decide to come back?" I looked at him and smiled.

"Everytime Mother and Father flew to France, they always said that their biggest wish was for me to be better by the time I was sixteen so I could meet you. We turn sixteen in December, and I couldn't sit there and ignore their wish.

"Plus, Lord Chamber decided to move back to England and he gave me a choice whether or not to come with him," I said. "I decided to come with because I wanted a change of scenery."

"Interesting. What motives do you have telling me all this? Are you planning something?" Ciel asked suspiciously.

"Those are unimportant right now. I have a question for you though. Will you accept me as a Phantomhive, Ciel? As your sister?" I asked, looking at him. He looked back at Sebastian and they almost appeared to communicated silently. When Ciel looked back at me, he nodded.

"I need time. And more proof," he said. "I cannot simply accept you like that. And even if I did, that would change nothing. You'd just be my sister, and our only tie would be blood. Ask anyone associated with me, and they will tell you that blood isn't important to me, especially when it concerns family."

I surprised him by laughing. "Ah, the Earl Phantomhive finally takes off his mask and shows the personality everyone has told me about. Tell me, Ciel, how difficult was it to remain polite to me?"

"None at all. I've been taught to be polite even in the most dreadful of company."

"You wound me, earl. Are you calling my company dreadful?" I laughed again at his expression. He was spluttering, outraged that I twisted his words. "Relax, Ciel. I was simply joking."

"Is this a time for jokes? I believe this is a serious time." He looked a bit frustrated at this point.

"Ciel, I believe it is getting rather late, don't you think? You really shouldn't stay out much longer," I said, lying even though it was clearly only mid-afternoon.

"She is right, my lord. We should get going," Sebastian said. Ciel nodded and they began to make their way out.

"Oh, and Ciel?" Ciel turned towards me. "If you want more proof, I suggest playing with your ring a bit. You see, it is a special ring that Mother and Father told me about. When you have found something unusual about it, come to me and bring the ring." He looked confused and left.

"Marie!" I called after plopping on the chair, my skirt askew. "Marie!" She appeared and bowed.

"Yes, my mistress?" she asked quietly.

"Prepare my training clothes. I need time to unwind, and what better way than excercise?" She nodded once more and left.c

"Finally. After the past couple weeks in fluffy dresses, I finally can take a break," I said as Marie handed me my clothes. She offered to help me dress, but I refused. I had dressed myself before.

She had handed me commoner's clothing, nothing but a simple tunic and pants. I laced up the soft leather shoes I had and pulled my extremely long hair into a bun on the nape of my neck.

"What will you be training with today, milady?" Marie asked once we reached the secluded courtyard the viscount said I could use for this purpose.

"Perhaps just simple fencing. Can you have one of the instructors come along with the swords?" Marie nodded and disappeared. When she came back, it was with Charles, one of the instructors Lord Chamber kept on hand for me.

We sparred until the sky was an inky black. I thanked Charles, and went inside, asking Marie to draw me a bath. As she prepared it, I flopped on my bed, exhausted. Marie came back in and lead me to the bathtub. I stripped and landed in the blessed hot water.

It was there in the steamy room that I finally began to think about the events from earlier. I typically spent bath time talking to myself and solving problems. "I can be such an arse," I grumbled. "Then again, he's the one who won't accept me."

"But, if I were him," I mused, "I'd probably be suspicious too. Even though I am the spitting image of him, just as a girl. You'd think that is proof enough..."

"Next time I see him, I will act as if nothing happened. I'll just apologize for my rudeness and move on until he figures out the ring," I decided. "He needs time, so I'll give it to him." I stood up out of the water and quickly dried off, rejecting Marie's help once more.

"I can dress myself Marie, and I have been able to since I was six," I said crossly. She looked at me for a bit before nodding and disappearing. I got dressed into my nightgown and lay down in my bed.

My necklace lay heavily on my chest. I toyed with it, still thinking. "Ciel Phantomhive, why won't you accept this? I doubt you are even considering it. It's so typical of your nature though. Why did I expect more of you? Tsk."
