Prologue: Colton's POV

Colton's POV:

I came running out the back door of my best friend and neighbours house.
"Wait up!" I yelled out for Adrian and Kevin as they sped off into the barn to get the horses ready. I just make it off the porch as Cassie pokes her head out the door her young eyes looking up at me.
"Colty, where are you going?" She says knowing I cannot resist her adorable face. She has recently turned four with bright green eyes and blonde hair tumbling past her shoulders. Our families were really close, with our fathers grew up together living on their family farms that they now run with only a small creek separating their lands. When my mother got sick i began spending more and more time with them. Being an only child they became like siblings to me, Adrian and I are best friends. His little brother always trailing along behind us, we got into a lot of trouble. It went on like that for years until we turned eight and their mother had a beautiful baby girl. I never held a baby before her so delicate and light. As the years past we found ourselves having tea parties more often than we'd admitted. We all had a soft spot for her.
"I'm going riding with your brothers, you know we can't take you Cas." I tell her feeling guilty for leaving her behind.
"Can you come play with me after?" She asked smiling brightly.
"Of course"
"Promise?"
"Yes, I gotta go tho." I replied in a hurry running to the barn in hopes of catching up to my friends.
In a rush I readied my horse and took off after them catch up to em at the lake.
"Took you long enough." Remarked Kevin as he jumped into the lake. I rolled my eyes and hurried to take my boots and shirt off diving in after him.

That was the last time I remember being carefree. My mother died that day. My father came and got me. I've never seen him in such a state. He was broken on the inside. As the years past he became more and more solitary tending to the farm became his life. I learned a lot from him helping him run the farm, and when I turned 18 he said I'd become his partner. We'd run it together father and son. We had dreams to buy more land and raise cattle and horses. That was all ended when he had a heart attack.
I soon realized the dreams we had were far from possible our farm had been failing for some time and my father hid it from me. I vowed then I'd turn things around. Id restore our farm and make our dreams come true for my father. I through everything I had into that farm and never looked back.
