Phil looked at the doors, and sighed. He knew that once he went through those doors he would be stuck in the dreadful high school for another 9 agonizing months. He looked down at his uniform and mentally wished himself good luck. When he looked back up he took a deep breath and reluctantly walked towards the building. He was NOT looking forward to the next 3 more years of high school he still has to conquer.
Phil is 16 years old and in year 11 (10th grade). No family, no friends, all alone. Well, he had his big brother, but he's always working to keep a roof over their heads. So it felt like he was all alone. And this is what feared Phil Lester the most. Being alone. But he couldn't do anything about it, that was the worst part. Phil is different, people fear different.
He started walking down the hall to his locker and pulled out a piece of paper from his bag with his locker combination and schedule on it. Before he approached his locker he looked at who his locker neighbors were and gasped. Ted Lunt to his right and Kim Linley to his left, his childhood best friends.
Back in Primary School, Ted, Kim, and Phil were best buds. The three weren't seen with out each other. But when Secondary School started, they all drifted away from each other slowly, each going to their own groups. Ted to the jocks, Kim to the preps, and Phil with the other outcasts. They did talk occasionally, but when Phil came out as gay they acted as if they never even learned his name. Phil was never bullied, but he became an outcast to the outcasts.
When he finally got the courage to approach his locker he hoped one of them would say something to him, it's been so long..
As Phil stood in front of locker 122 he looked over at Ted, who made eye contact with him for the total of .3 milliseconds before turning and walking down the corridor. So Phil turned and looked over at Kim, who pretended he was not there. "Hey Kim." Phil said barely above a whisper while pretending to be occupied by trying to open his locker. Kim just looked back at him with zero expression on her face, not saying anything back. She then closed her locker a little harder than necessary and walked away coldly, the opposite direction than Ted took.
This continued throughout the day, Phil trying to make conversation with people and having them just blow him off. It seemed as if everyone ignored him, except the teachers of course. Phil sighed and truly thought he was going to be alone forever. That is until later that day...
At 3:00 P.M. the school bell rang signalling that school was over. As Phil walked to the bus, he stared at it and thought 'I just have to sit through a 15 minute bus ride then I'm home free.' To his right he heard laughter and he turned to see all the preps standing in a circle laughing at some joke. He spotted Kim and his heart sank. Then he saw Charlie and his heart sped up. Charlie was one of the cutest guys in school, in Phil's opinion anyway. Phil looked down at his uniform and tried to smooth it out in an attempt to make himself more appealing to a guy that will never notice him.
His black pants were fine, but it was his white dress shirt and blue vest with the school logo on it that was wrinkly. Phil made a mental note to himself to start ironing.
When Phil got onto the bus he went straight to the back and sat down. All the way home he thought about his life and how utterly alone he was. He kept trying to think of reasons why people didn't like him or want to be around him. Is it purely because he's openly gay or is it something else? Is he too awkward or geeky? There has to be a reason why people shut him out! Phil shut his eyes tightly and swallowed in attempt to get rid of the lump in his throat. People just didn't like Phil and he would have to learn to accept it. Tears filled his eyes as he ran off the bus, why did it have to be him? 'Why me?' Phil thought as his vision went blurry from the tears. He didn't even try to to fix his sight. He liked seeing the world all messed up, just like it is all the time.
