"You did what?!!" Her father yelled, completely sending the whole place into a tense silence at his outburst.
"I applied for the FBI and was accepted." She spoke in reply softly, her hands gripping the napkin in her lap with white knuckles at his outburst.
Silence fell and then only the sound of a sharp slap sounded making everyone in the restaurant flinch and avert their eyes pretending they weren't listening in. Her father retook his seat, not caring that everyone in town would know he struck his daughter. His hand leaving a harsh bruise on her cheek bone where he struck her.
"You will not be leaving! I forbid it Angel!! You're needed here, you're going to Law School and that's final!!" Her father the slapper demanded making it obvious the issue was not up for debate.
He went back to his food, muttering angrily under his breath about respect and obedience. All of the usual nonsense she had heard since she was a child.
Angel though stood up, suddenly drawing attention from everyone unintentionally. She wasn't going to let him control her life, not anymore. No law school, nothing except what she had chosen for herself.
"No, you can't control my life. Not anymore."
As she stepped away heading for the door her father stood up and screamed after her in utter rage.
"You step out that door and you're done for, you'll be no daughter of mine!!"
Angel whose hand had been on the door turned and looked at him emotionless, her gaze flickered down to her mother and two younger siblings. They knew she couldn't stay, if she did then she wouldn't be happy.
The three of them looked away from her blinking back tears as her voice calmly replied.
"Goodbye...father..."
She could hear his cursing for a bit and quickly headed home, grabbing her suite-case full of clothes and a few personal items she had packed earlier in the week when she had received her approval letter.
Ducking out the garage door she tossed her bags into the trunk of the cab waiting for her and quickly got inside, giving him directions to the airport.
She would be in Virginia and at the Academy before noon the next day. She had made her choice and for once, the weight of the world seemed to lift off of her shoulders and peace filled her.
Angel was finally living, and nothing was going to keep her from chasing her dream.
