There it lay right in the middle of the junction of roads! From this far I couldn't really make out what it is exactly. It was something rectangular and brown and huge. I tried to squint and see it in the street lights but just couldn't make out. The vehicles kept passing by as if there's nothing there. I mean why wouldn't they? Come on, it's India! Something fallen on road isn't anything great enough to stop the vehicle and get a look at it.
I don't know what came into me, I really wanted to go and get a look at it. At 1 A.M. I usually wouldn't even dare to open the door of my own room and step out, with the fear of my mom scolding me, let alone go down till the main road. But this time it was different! I suddenly got the guts. I pulled on a pair of jeans and hoodie and opened the door to my room as quietly as possible. And waited to see if there's any movement. No movement!... I shut the door as silently as i opened it... again waited... No movement, just the sound of light snoring of my Mom from the other room... Great! I tiptoed to the door and unlatched all the locks closing the door behind me holding the latches with the keys. I didn't even care to check what footwear I am putting on or if they're mine also or not in the first place!
Thankfully the elevator came soon. I got down and found the watchman asleep and as I guessed the gate was locked! Climbing over it wasn't an option and it would obviously wake the watchman thinking I am a thief. I walked towards the watchman as i tied my hair in a high ponytail and pulled up my hood to cover my face. As I came near he stirred and saw me. He jolted awake and sat upright as if he'd seen a ghost. I quickly went to him, "Don't worry uncle! It's me! I stay on the 10th floor, could you pleassseee open the gate for five minutes? Pretty pleassseee!!!"
Since he was too annoyed to have been disturbed in his sleep he just nodded and went to the gate to unlock it. Yayyy I 'm out! I couldn't stop grinning. I thanked the watchman and told him I'll be back in few mins. As I walked towards the thing, my heartbeat increased; I could almost hear it thudding in my ears. I crossed and went in the middle of the junction holding my hoodie tight. I reached the spot and looked down at it... It was a brown covered book as big as a square foot. I looked around and realized that it had hell lot of pages. I leaned down to get a better look. There was something about this book that I kept feeling a strange pull towards it. The cover of the book read "THE SECRETS OF MAYA" in a very faint writing embossed on it.
I instinctively glided my fingers over the name. The printing paint had scraped and faded but the embossing of the letters was still there. I could have sat right there to find out what it is, but i didn't want people thinking that I am one of those homeless psychos who roam in the middle of the streets doing random things at any time of the day or night. So I chose to take it home and then open. But as I put my hands around it, a current went through my arms!
"Oww!!" I exclaimed in pain and jumped back.
I just couldn't get it! I went closer again and the book opened to a random page... It was blank! Weird! How did a hard bound heavy book just open on its own? Before I could rack my brains any further I realized that there were words appearing on it.
"Oh what the hell! How is this happening?" I frantically looked around to see if anyone else could see this happening, but most of them just passed by hardly aware of it and the rest just gave me are-you-crazy looks and went by.
I started reading what had appeared on the pages to myself...
"Do not touch me! Who are you?"
I just stood staring at it for a while. I couldn't believe my eyes. Is this really happening?
I said in a very timid voice (almost whispered) stuttering," M-my n-n-nam-me i-is r-r-r-Rochelle b-b-Bates!"
I again stood there just staring at it dumbstruck. Something was appearing; it read...
"Oh! Can you see me?"
"Hell yeah! Unfortunately you are not tiny as an ant to not be seen!" I smirked finding my voice back.
"BUT YOU ARE A HUMAN!"
"Woah mister! Watch that tone! I might be a human but i'm the best of them all" I said with pride in my voice, as if I'm the queen of humanity!
"We'll see! Anyways just take me somewhere comfortable, this hard surface is really hurting my back."
"Noways am I laying even a finger on you again! I know I am a little crazy but I don't need a shock treatment for sure." I glared at it. Within a moment I straightened my face as more people started staring at me as if i'm bonkers, while passing by.
"Okay! I am sorry for the previous current. I promise I will not do it again. Now will you please get me off the ground? It's annoying!"
I knew if I stood there any longer talking to a book on the ground people are probably going to drag me to the nearest mental asylum! I quickly picked the book in my arms as it closed itself. It was damn heavy so started walking home carrying it on my waist as fast as possible.
