She tried to ignore them.
The stares, the rumors.
She tried to hold her temper in.
She really, really did.
But in the end, she just couldn't.
It happened at lunch.
Lily asked her if she was okay.
She shouldn't have done that.
"Of course I'm okay!
Why wouldn't I be okay?
Everything I had is gone.
Gone!"
She started pushing food off of tables.
"Gone. Gone. Gone!
Everything I knew or wanted or had is gone!"
She was staring out at the school.
"I am so fucking okay!
I just love the stares and rumors!
My life is so fucking great!"
Jessie stormed out of the dining hall.
Her eyes glistened with tears.
Just like the last time she ran out, the room was silent.
Then Sirius stood up.
James looked at him.
"Where are you going?"
"For a walk."
He left.
James looked over at Lily.
She was crying.
He led her out of the hall and into an empty classroom.
"Don't worry, they'll get over it."
"He might."
"She will too."
"No."
"Lily, you don't-"
"I've seen her like this before."
"When?"
"Before Sirius. She was depressed."
Silence.
She spoke again.
"She was never happy. Then she met Sirius.
She's sad again."
James spoke.
"Sirius is back to his old ways, too.
He's smoking again."
Lily looked at him.
"James, What are we going to do?"
Then he collapsed.
He fell against the wall, head in his hands.
"I don't know, Lily. I don't know."
She sat down next to him.
"Our best friends are broken."
She was whispering.
James sobbed.
"I know."
There was nothing they could do.
They knew that.
But they tried anyway.
