Sirius thought that he knew the meaning
of devastation
and panic
and true sadness.
But it turns out he didn't.
not until he saw Jessie
the girl he loved
laying lifeless
on the ground
underneath the Astronomy tower.
Her brown hair
covered her face
as she sprawled on her side.
James was the one to find her.
His cries of distress
drew a crowd around the girl.
Hushed phrases of panic were spread,
"someone get Dumbledore."
"oh my god."
"Is that Jessie Montgomery?"
Sirius Black
was coming back from detention
when he saw the crowd.
Curious, he walked over
to see what all the fuss was about.
Remus Lupin,
his best friend,
saw him
and tried to get him to stop.
"Sirius, maybe you shouldn't go over there yet."
That's when Sirius knew something was wrong.
Something was terribly wrong.
He pushed through the distressed crowd
that went silent when they saw him.
Seeing the lifeless girl
he fell to his knees
and pushed her hair out of her face,
not believing it.
The eyes of the one he loved
were closed
and it almost looked as if she was sleeping
if it weren't for the blood.
He held her body in his arms
and he cried.
My god, did he cry.
His anguished sobs filled the air
and people looked away,
not wanting to intrude.
Sirius Black
was officially gone.
No amount of coaxing
could get him to leave his room
as he looked at every picture
every memory
every song
every note
that he had ever shared with Jessie Montgomery.
He went to her room
and looked through her things
to see what he could find.
Her drawers held notes
that he had passed to her
during classes.
Her trunk
held love letters
he'd sent her during the summer.
Her bathroom
held the lavender shampoo
that she used to smell so beautiful
all the time.
Her wardrobe
held the leather jacket
he had given her after she borrowed it.
He picked up that jacket
two weeks after she died
and it smelled like her
and he cried again.
Sirius Black broke down
two more times
after that day.
Once when her funeral was held
the day after her birthday,
May 19th,
their three year anniversary.
The other time
was when they graduated
one year later.
On that day,
not even her enemies
could bring themselves to smile.
Jessie Montgomery
was supposed to be there
smiling
graduating
growing up with them.
But she wasn't
because of a little thing
called depression.
Two years later,
Sirius Black
made the worst mistake he'd ever make.
the last mistake he'd ever make.
