"I'm terribly sorry Ms.Pierce, but in order for you to live a full human life, we must preform heart surgery. But don't worry,..."
That was it. That was all I had to hear from Dr.Montgomery, the word surgery. The one thing that I fear the most. The one thing that I have tried to avoid. The thing that resulted in my own mother's death. Surgery.
"Ms.Pierce? Ms.pierce, are you alright?" He asked in a concerned tone.
I just sat there, still paralyzed from the words that had left his mouth. I felt my eyes begin to water up.
"Excuse me." I said, getting up and walking out of the room. The heels of my boots clicked against the tile floor as I made my way to the elevator. Once I reached the ground floor, I rushed out of the building and into the cool spring weather.
I walked through the parking lot searching for my car. Once I spotted it, I rushed towards it, and hopped in quickly. I sighed, my hands on the steering wheel. I let the tears loose, and they flowed freely down the sides of my cheeks.
My phone began to ring, "Dad" Flashed on the screen. I quickly blew my nose and wiped the tears away. I picked up my phone and answered it.
"Hello?" I say, trying to hide the fact that I had been crying.
"Hey sweetie, how did it go?" He asked, his words filled with hope.
"Um, Dr.Montgomery says that I have to go through heart surgery." I say, my voice cracking at the end.
He stays quiet for a while. Then speaks, "Oh, sweetheart... I'm so sorry." He says, concern evident in his voice. "But you don't have to worry, I promise you everything will be fine. I'll-"
"No dad, it's not going to be fine. That is exactly what the doctors told mom before she had her surgery, and you and I both know how that turned out. " I say frustrated. "Don't give me false hope."
"Honey, listen to me. This time its going to be different. I'll take you to the best surgeon in all of America. Believe me, I won't let what happened to your mother happen to you too. I promise that everything will be fine and that you will live to see your grandchildren's children." He says with the most serious and promising tone.
"But dad, that's going to cost you thousands of dollars. I know that right now we aren't at our best financial state. I mean, how are you going to be able t-" he cut me off.
"Money doesn't matter. I'll pay as much as it takes as long as I know that your life is between good hands, and that the chances of succession of the operation are one hundred percent. I'll pay not thousands, but millions if it means that you are going to be safe and healthy."
His words brought tears to my eyes. But in a good way. He made me feel special, like there was only one of me in this entire world.
"Dad..." I didn't know what to say. " Thank you."
"Anything for you sweetheart." He says calmly. "Now come over, I made my signature Italian pasta!" He says excitedly trying to lighten up the mood.
A smile finds its way across my face, "Okay, I'm on my way." I say, hanging up the phone.
I flip open the mirror and see two brown eyes staring back at me. Those eyes looked broken and terrified. The deeper I stared into them, the clearer it became. I get a napkin and wipe away all traces of tears, closing the mirror after.
