Her scent drifted to where he was seated, faintly but present. Strong arousal hit him hard. His Wolf panting and restless wanting to come out in a hot pursuit that would end with mating bite. He knew she was around the corners somewhere and very close. Only her presence could drive him wild.

Alex glanced around. He stared at every young woman in the hall intently. Scrutinizing them one after the other, looking for any suspicious movement. Fidgeting, anything to pin her down. Anything to give her away. Any freakish movement from any of them, he was seriously on her case.

Only a young, beautiful girl with long, straight blonde hair and blue fascinating eyes seems to notice his searching gaze. She smiled warmly at him.

She was not his runaway mate. Of course, he could tell.

He returned the nice gesture with a hard look. She quickly looked away hurt and scared. Alex immediately felt remorseful for doing that to her. He knew he could be very intimidating due to his Beta status in their small community, but he couldn't help himself. He needed to find her...fast.

"Hey, you are scaring the beautiful ladies off..."

"...Again."

Philip his best friend and Alpha said with a trace of humor coating his voice. With his popular playboy smile on his face.

Alex leaned back in his chair, stretched his long legs and covered his face with his hands. She was driving him crazy. She had been doing this to him for years now. So close but far away, so near but out of reach.

He had felt her presence and sweet scent for the first time at his eighteenth birthday party. He was over the moon. Thinking he was one of the luckiest werewolves that had their mate in the same community with them. Most weres had to travel far in search of their mates or wait to attend the biannual wolf conference. A three-day program—more like a get-together party—that brings unmated werewolves from different parts of the world together to find their soul mates.

The council of elders of W.W.C. also known as Werewolf Worldwide Community set up the program when Alphas had kept complaining about too many unmated wolves in their pack which was responsible for the decrease in the population at the time. So far the program had been successful. At least about half of the participants leave happily mated.

But fate had smiled down at him and gave him his mate right on his doorstep and at that early stage in life.

Or so he thought...

That day had been the most embarrassing of his twenty-seven years on earth. He had looked like a psycho, sniffing all the unmated girls at the party, searching for his mate. Few girls had loved the attention and overlooked his actions. But most of the girls had left in anger which had made the gathering the shortest party of the century.

Alex wouldn't dare sniff anyone on a normal day because of his conservative nature. But his mate's scent gave him the confidence to sniff them all.

He had stayed indoors after that night for weeks. His bedroom became his sanctuary. Alex couldn't leave the packhouse, not even their apartment. For he was too embarrassed beyond imagination to face society again... Especially the girls.

"...god" He groaned out softly as that day's discomfort rushed back to him in many folds. Filled with the day's shame, he hit his forehead repeatedly with his palm.

He had behaved out of character that day. Totally out of his element.

The girls would have laughed it off. Had it been Philip that embarrassed himself beyond recognition. Philip—the cool future Alpha. Phillip was such a friendly and fun person to be around. Most of the guests came because Phillip would be there and the rest because of the free food and drinks.
