"Navy! You're so slow!" The older of the two sisters giggled as they reached the top of the hill.
"Yes, well, I wasn't exactly planning to run crazily in the middle of the night, now, was I?" Navy huffed, standing next to her sister. "Now, what on earth do you want to show me?" Victoria grinned and pointed eagerly up at the night sky. Navy wolf-whistled.
"Woah,"
The two had grown up with a love for the sky. From that night, the princesses would go out at several times- from the earliest hours of the morning to the latest of the evening- just to gaze in wonder and awe at the sky far above them.
It was a few days before Navy's ninth birthday when their lives began to entwine with the sky that they loved so dearly.
Victoria had woken Navy up, as usual, in the middle of the night, and they had hurried out of the castle, laughing and leaping excitedly. They sat on top of the same hill, staring upwards and pointing out the same constellations that they always did.
That was until the elder of the two came across an extraordinary discovery.
"Navy, look! Right there!" Victoria's voice decreased down to an awed whisper. "A shooting star." Navy raised an eyebrow.
"You've never seen one?" She shook her head sadly.
"All of my errands are indoors and boring. Why do I have to be the heir to the throne anyway?" Navy shrugged, looking up quickly. "How do they work?"
"You make a wish on it."
"Does it come true?"
"Well, make a wish and you'll see." Victoria tutted, smirking.
"Typical Navi. So..." She raised an eyebrow, frowning. "...infernal." Navy herself snorted.
"Hurry up and make a wish. I want to go back to bed." Victoria opened her mouth, but Navy stopped her. "In your head, stupid. Else it won't come true." The only noise that followed was a short huff, before complete silence filled the air.
This went on awkwardly for a few minutes, before Victoria finally spoke up.
"I've wished. Let's go back home, shall we?" Navy stood up and beamed.
"Glad-" She paused, clutching her head.
Those silly images again...
All this weeping and burning was giving her a terrible headache...
"Navy?" She snapped out of it quickly. "Let's go home." Her sister took her hand and she gasped in shock.
"The enemy came over the hill at midnight, sir!" A soldier gasped. "Many of our men are injured or have gone missing!" Navy looked up at her father, who sighed.
"The fires are still burning all across the kingdom," He looked back down at her in defeat. "Navy... everyone is gone."
"Navy!" She snapped out of it and stared back at her older sister. "Are you alright?" Without getting an answer, Victoria held Navy's hand tightly and began to hurry down the hill. "C'mon, let's go. You're creeping me out." Navy nodded, eager to get back inside as quickly as possible.
As soon as she entered the castle, she rushed into her parents' bedroom, her mind racing with thoughts- awful, horrible things she wished that she could forget for eternity.
"Father!" The man glanced at his youngest daughter, almost disapprovingly.
"Navy, it is almost midnight. What is it that is so urgent at this hour?" She began to pace, out of stress.
"The enemy! They are heading over that hill!" She pointed out the window desperately. "Please, Father! Trust me!" Her father said nothing, and didn't seem to be preparing to do anything, causing her eyes to begin to brim with tears.
She couldn't lose anyone else.
She wouldn't lose anyone else.
"Father, trust me! You must save this kingdom!" Her father opened his mouth to scold her for even being awake at such hours when the clock tower chimed midnight boldly from the square. Navy's eyes widened and the tears streamed heavily down her cheeks.
She made no effort to wipe them away.
"Father, please! For the kingdom's sake!"
Kissing her forehead, the king nodded solemnly and made his way outside, along with his troops.
Just as Navy had predicted, the enemy had gone over the exact hill she had imagined.
The kingdom was saved from what would have been its mass downfall.
Her father, however, was not.
