It was sometime in the morning
early enough to still be dark
shadows painted in the room
with paint brushes made from silence
blended with my breaths
I was awake enough to hear
my heart blinking in my chest
batting it’s eyelashes
with every breath I took
I was suddenly aware of the feeling
opening up within me
an egg sac bursting and sending
little spiders racing through me
spinning memory webs
It was sometime in the night
early enough to still be light
sunset painted in the sky
with paint brushes made from echoes
blended with our breaths
she looked at me
with eyes like clipped wings
and a voice like broken guitar strings
she was standing in the streetlight
it was dark enough to see
her lips moving and making words
her words making tears condensate
on her bottom eyelashes
her face splashed
with a sorry red
her eyes a sorry blue
as she wrote the words
“it’s over”
on my skin
and it wasn’t until later that I noticed
it was written in permanent marker.
