CHAPTER 4 - Searching in vain
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ONE WEEK LATER xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
(Random shop woman's pov)
The ding-a-ling of the door bell awoke me from my daydreams of sunbathing on a beach in Miami. I'd been trying to convince Gary we should just leave, for a week or two and go there to relax. He'd broken his leg falling off the roof - I'd told him he should of just called the electrician over, instead the fool had gone up there saying it was nothing he couldn't fix - and now he was stuck at home, well I took care of the shop.
I looked up with my usual polite smile I serve customers with, "How ma-" the sentence died on my lips when I saw who it was.
Bain Parkkler.
He wore stained baggy trousers (the kind of stains from a weeks old breakfast come back up, not the fashionable kind), an ugly bright yellow top stuck out from under a ratty jacket. His hair was light brown, greasy and looked like it hadn't been cut in a while; the same could be said about his facial hair.
His eyes held a darkness that lurked in their depths; they spoke of haunting things they'd witnessed.
Rumour was Bain Parkkler was a murdering rapist.
"How are you today then Mr Parkkler?" I said with icy cold politeness sharpening my words, well underneath I was trembling with fear.
Bain Parkkler stared at me unblinkingly "I'm well enough thanks Ria."
Thoughes eye's, they looked so blank as if he had no soul.
"I just came for the stuff on the list I gave you last week."
The police said there was no evidence to pin it on anyone, but I knew it was him.
"Of course. I'll just go get it then." I gratefully left him there and made my way into the back of the store where I started rummaging through the packing we kept there.
Hearing footsteps coming my way I tried to hurry it up a bit more "I'll be out in a sec." I called my heart thundering inside my chest painfully loud.
"I'll help you."
His voice was to close for my liking and I tried to move even faster, making things drop in the process.
"No, no I think I've found the stuff you don't need to come back here." I replied shakily, a tin dropped on my foot but I barely noticed as I spied the last thing on the list.
Grabbing the bicarbonate soda I turned feeling slightly triumphant in my find, that was until I saw who stood not ten feet away, blocking the doorway to the cash register.
"I've got the stuff so all you've gotta do is pay."
He took a step forward
"I heard your husband broke his leg."
I gulped, putting my hands behind me to hide their shaking "Ah yes, but he's coming over anyway to help keep me company."
His eyes. They weren’t right, they looked distant, so blank. As if there wasn't anything human there. He took another step forward.
"Hey Ria darlin, did you hear about them attacks taking place?"
I took one back. “yes, they said it was tragic and possibly the work of a supernatural."
We human's had learnt of the existence of werewolves and vampires since young but no one really believed it till they came out to the world, now every time there's a crime the police and the government like to put the blame on the supernatural. It was all a lie; I knew the truth of the murders. Sally had been my best friend since we were young and she'd shown me the truth of the matter, but it had cost her dearly.
