"YOU CAN'T JUST SHIP ME OFF LIKE THIS!!! IT AIN'T FAIR!!!" I hollered at my mama. Tears were pouring down my cheeks and crashing like glass onto the hardwood floor as I stood, staring at my mama.
"Life isn't fair, Adalyn, dammit, don't you know that?! You think it was fair when I got pregnant at 16?! You think it's fair that your daddy walked out on us when you were 4 years old?! YOU THINK IT'S FAIR I WORK ALL THE DAMN TIME, JUST TO BARELY SCRAPE BY?! I CAN'T TAKE IT NO MORE!!!" she hollered back.
I stood there, struck dumb. We never brought up Daddy. It hurt too much. She looked so tired. So drained. I tried my best to help her out, but she never seemed to want me around, which is why, I assumed, she always looked so gosh darn tired.
"I know someone for ya, Addy. He ain't much older than you, but he's a good man. He can take care of ya. You'll be somewhere safe." she said quietly.
I collapsed on the floor in a puddle of tears. "It ain't fair, Mama. It ain't fair." I bawled. She sat there, staring at me bawl like a baby on the kitchen floor. This was it. She was sending me off to live with a strange man in a strange neighborhood in a strange part of town. And I would never hear from her again.
