“No!” I screamed, running back to my brother.
“Come on Danah, we have to leave,” My mother said in a stern voice.
“But I don’t want to leave,” I said with tears in my eyes.
I was only four years old; my brother was six, when our parents’ divorce. We didn’t know what was happening at the time. My brother stayed with my dad and I moved out with my mum. I haven’t talked to my brother or my father since the day we left, 11 years ago. When my mum found out that she was pregnant with Natalie, we moved out of Sydney and into Brisbane.
“Danah,” I heard someone whisper while pulling on my arm. My eyes flickered open. I looked to the side of my bed and saw my little sister, Natalie. She was born the year after my parents got divorced. My mum found a new boyfriend and then they had her.
“Yes?” I smiled down at her.
“I came in to tell you that breakfast was ready, but then I noticed you sleeping and you looked scared.”
I smiled slightly, the thoughts of my brother clouding my mind. I didn’t remember his name or anything about him. I remembered something’s about the way he looked, but that’s about it. I remembered that he had dark hair. He always used to wear a beanie, pulling it down over his face when he didn’t want to talk to me. I tried to stop thinking about him, remembering that Natalie was still in my room.
“Uh, yeah, I’ll be downstairs in a minute,” I said to Natalie. She did a little nod and skipped out of my room. I slowly climbed out of bed and walked over to the mirror. I tied my long, wavy, brown hair into a high bun before walking out my bedroom door and down the stairs. I walked into the dining room and saw Natalie, Mum and her boyfriend, Dave, all sitting at the table.
“Morning,” I mumbled, rubbing my eyes. I walked over to the cupboard and got some cereal and a bowl. I grabbed the milk out of the fridge and poured it into the bowl with the cereal. I walked over to the table and sat in the chair next to Natalie. I silently ate my cereal while scrolling through twitter on my phone. I put my bowl in the sink and then walked up the stairs.
I had a quick shower and put my school uniform on. A knee length, navy blue shirt with a shirt that was a slightly lighter blue. I brushed my teeth, brushed my hair and tied it into a high ponytail, chucked all my books into my school bag and then ran down the stairs and out the door.
“Bye!” I yelled, shutting the door behind me. I unlocked my phone scrolled through twitter while walking down the street in the summer heat.
Finally, the last day of the school year was here.
