Sophie stared at the scroll. She wasn't sure how to feel, sure she liked Keefe - a lot - but did she love him? She sighed and sat down on the couch, Why does life have to be so hard!?!? She buried her head in her hands in despair. She heard a knock at the door, groaning, she got up and answered it. Tam stood at the door, seeing her face, he frowned. "What's wrong?" he asked "I..." Sophie didn't know what to answer, nothing was exactly wrong but... Sophie showed him the scroll and Tam's eyes narrowed. After a couple of minutes, Sophie finally broke the silence "So...what do you think?" Sophie asked, shifting her feet. Tam looked up and Sophie thought that he was about to say something profound "Sophie, I don't want to deal with mess. You hold his heart and only you can decide what to do with it." Sophie sighed, Tam was right. "Want to come inside?" She asked "Sure," Tam stepped inside.Sophie hugged Tam goodbye, despite what he said about not wanting to get involved - he actually gave some pretty good advice. Sophie decided to go to bed thinking that maybe things would make sense in the morning.
Things did NOT make sense in the morning. The day started off with Sophie having to throw out almost all her shoes since Iggy had put Sludgers in them. Groaning, she wobbled down the stairs in heels that Biana had given her as a graduation present last year. She heard someone at a door and then saw Keefe in front of the stairs, tripping in surprise, Sophie fell into his arms. "Can't stay away from me, huh Foster?" Keefe smirked but Sophie thought that she could see a hint of worry in his eyes.
"Sooo..." Keefe said after an awkward silence "Did you get the scroll?" Sophie blushed and looked away "Yes, I just... Keefe, I really, really like you. I just... don't know." Keefe set her down gently "Yeah," He looked majestically off into the distance. He finally looked back at her and Sophie saw tears in his eyes. "I think I'll go," He walked away-through the kitchen-and out the door. Sophie sighed and walked into the kitchen for breakfast, she noticed that there was a suspicious lack of Custardbursts on the table. Sophie smiled fondly, Keefe must've taken the missing ones. She grabbed one and sat down at the table, she looked up and saw Edaline frowning sternly at her "Sophie," "Yeees," Sophie answered cautiously "Keefe really loves you." Sophie sighed and looked down "I know. I just don't know if I love him back." She looked back up and expected Edaline to say something like 'Just tell him how you feel!' but instead Edaline sighed and and her eyes got a far off look. "I had the same problem once,"
Sophie blinked, she had always assumed that Edaline and Grady had been together from the start, an epic romance! "How did you know that he was the one?" Sophie asked. Edaline shook her head and came back to the present. "I asked myself if I could live without Grady and I knew I couldn't. So I chose him." Sophie put a hand over her heart, that was so romantic! Edaline looked at Sophie, "If you ever need to talk, just come to me. Otherwise, You're going to be late!" Sophie looked outside and saw that the sun was already almost all the way up, she quickly grabbed her bags and ran to the Leapmaster.
*****
Sophie walked to lunch after a exhausting session with Counciller Bronte. She plopped onto her usual spot. "Hey Sophie!" Biana and Dex walked up and sat down across from her "What's up?" Biana asked and Dex stared adoringly at her "Um-nothing! Nothing, just the usual," Keefe raised a eyebrow "So your planning on saving the world after lunch?" Sophie blushed and looked down as Dex laughed.
*****
Sophie laid on her bed, staring at the ceiling and thinking about what she should say to Keefe. After lunch, she had rushed off to class and Keefe had tried to say something to her, but the crowd in the halls pulled her away before she could hear it. Sighing, she rolled over and noticed a note sticking halfway out of Vertina's frame. What could that be? Sophie wondered and she went to pull it off.
Vertina blinked on right before Sophie pulled out the note. Instead of her usual snobby pout, she actually looked kind of excited, "Omygoicawuttisywhutappens," Sophie heard her mutter, "What?" "Oh, nothing." Vertina blinked innocently, "Just commenting about how you're missing less eyelashes than usual." Sophie glared and pulled out the note.
Meet me under the tree
"Way to be straight-forward," Sophie grumbled, she was so done with vague messages after she and her friends defeated the Neverseen. "I wonder what tree they mean," Sophie looked out the window and saw Calla's tree framed in the fading sunset. That must be what tree it is! Sophie ran out the door and through Havenfield's - well - fields. Once she smelled the sweet scent of the flowers, memories that still hadn't lost their sharp edge yet crashed over her and she collapsed onto something soft beneath Calla's tree, sobbing.
She felt the soft thing crying too. Looking up in surprise, she saw Keefe's tear stained face looking down at her. Holding her in his arms, they silently shook with sobs until they had no more tears.
Sophie lay in Keefe's lap, silently staring at the stars. "Are you Okay?" she slowly asked Keefe "Yes - I am Keefe! How could I not be?" Keefe tried to keep his voice light but Sophie could hear how pained his voice was as memories floated to the surface. "I - I just..." Keefe trailed off and Sophie looked at his tear-stained face. His ice blue eyes where shimmering with tears. Keefe looked down and their eyes met. Keefe leaned down and he slowly kissed Sophie. Sophie slid her hands around his neck and sank into it, warm butterflies fluttered in her stomach and her face felt like it was on fire. Slowly, Sophie pulled away and stared into Keefe's eyes, she saw that he was smiling. "You have no idea how long I have wanted to do that," he whispered, they leaned in and were about to kiss again when Sophie heard a loud cough. She turned and saw Grady glaring at them with a slightly amused look on his face.
"Hey Dad," Sophie said meekly before Grady burst out laughing. "The look on your face!" He gasped, rolling on the ground. "Um...Dad? Why aren't you mad? Not that I mind-" Sophie added quickly "But I thought you would be more upset," Grady finally stopped laughing and stood up "Keefe asked me permission to date you and I said yes. I would've thought that you guys would take things slower though," Sophie looked at Keefe again, "You asked permission?" She asked incredulosly, "Yeah, I knew how much Grady and Edaline meant to you and I didn't want you to have to go behind your parents back if you dated me." Sophie just stared, What the heck was in the water here?
10 YEARS LATER
Sophie huridly ran around panicking in her wedding dress. The wedding started in one minute and she lost her shoes. Giving up, she pulled on boots she used when she worked with Verdi, who still hadn't become a vegetarian, and ran outside. Walking down the aisle, Sophie smiled. She stood in front of Keefe, who looked hotter than ever. Taking her vows, she and Keefe faced their guest, they stood up and started cheering. All of a sudden, Sophie heard screams and saw giant, metal, spiders crawling out from under the chairs. Sighing, she turned to Keefe and saw him hiding a smirk, "Better get going Foster. We can't have anything mess up this wedding," smirking, he pulled her away under Calla's tree and stared at the ocean. Dex, Biana, Fitz, Linh, and Tam stood at their side. Sophie felt herself smiling at how her life was right then. Because now, she was happy.
