Chapter One: Confusion

Scared. That was all I felt. Being taken away from my mother at such a young age scared me. What was happening? Did I do something wrong? Was something going to happen to my mom? Where were they taking me? What was about to happen to me? I didn't have a name and I didn't know these people. Why were they taking me at such a young age? I was only a month old! I was put into a trailer where I met another filly. She had a beautiful jet black coat and had blue eyes and a blaze on her face and four stockings. I said hello to her but she didn't respond until a few minutes later."It happened so fast. It was just to sudden." I had no idea what she was talking about. So I asked her. She told me that she was taken away from her mother today and she is only a month old. She wasalso really confused. I told her that the same thing just happened to me too. We were both really confused and had no idea what was happening to us or where we are going. The drive took about three hours. When we finally reached our destination, I was horrified to what I saw. Young, old, skinny and fat. They were all in pens standing in there own feces. This is where we were going. Then I realized what this place really was. It was a slaughter house action. My mother had told me about these and the slaughter houses themselves. The unknown men led us out of the trailer and put us into a line of about twenty to thirty horses. We waited about an hour or two when the gate finally opened. Both of us ran into a pen where there was a man standing in the corner with a whip. There were people all around us and just watching us as we frantically ran around the pen in fear. There was a man yelling out numbers and when he said those numbers people would raise their hands. When the numbers got two high for some people the fight came between three people. There was a man with rugged clothes on and had a mean and nasty look on his face. Then on the other side was a mother and her daughter. They went back and forth for what felt like hours was really only a few minutes. Finally the man gave up because of the high numbers and the mother and her daughter had won us over. We were led out of the ring and given to the young lady and her daughter outside of the pens. They loaded us up into their trailer and then drove away. It wasn't a very long drive. It was only about 45 minutes. Once we finally got to their place we could both tell that this was a horse rescue organization. The name of the farm was Horse Haven Rescue. They backed up the truck to the barn and then opened up the trailer door to lead us out. Once we stepped off the trailer we could see that there was a small pen with shavings and a person in a white a white coat with a kit in her hands. The humans called these people Veterinarians. The Vet came over to me first and grabbed the lead rope that was on my halter. She covered my eyes so that I wouldn't spook from whatever she was doing. I felt a little pinch on my neck and then it was over. She took the blindfold off and did the same to the other filly. After she was done the young girl led us to an empty stall and then put us in it. She walked in and shut the door behind her. She decided to name the black filly Sage because of her black coat and she named me Luna because of my sweet personality. She said that I was also the first chestnut horse to come to the rescue. They started this rescue only a few months ago so they didn't have a lot of horses at the moment. Both Sage and I fell asleep pretty fast after out long day that we had. We rested our eyes for another long day that may come ahead of us.

Chapter Two: Stolen

The sun was shinning through the cracks of the stall telling me that it was morning. As soon as I stood up I walked over and nudged Sage to tell her it was time to wake up. As we were both trying to wake up the woman's daughter came up to the door to find us up and awake. She walked in and put on our halters, hooked the leadropes on and then led us out. She brought both of us to a small pen and then unhooked us. Another girl that worked as an employee at the farm was holding two bottles with what looked like to me was milk and I was right. The girls were going to have to bottle feed us until we were old enough to start eating grass, grain, and hay like all of the other horses. Every day the same two girls which are now known as Izzy and Jesse bottle fed us and took us out to the pasture to play around with the other horses for a while. As we grew up we got stronger and our coats became more shiny. We were both 11 months old now and old enough to be put up for adaption. Izzy took pictures of us and then posted them on their website hoping that some loving family would adopt us. One day Izzy and Jesse came up to us with a group of people. It was a family of a Mother,a father, and two kids. They patted us and led us around until they finally decided to adopt us. They lived some miles away and didn't bring their trailer with them so they said that that they would come and get us in a few days. That night I couldn't stop thinking about being adopted and how much fun it would be to meet new people and new horses. But then a horrible shriek came from a few stalls down that distracted me from my visions. It was Jade. What was happening to her? I then noticed that her stall door was wide open and there was a persons foot sticking out of the stall. Then it came to me. Jade was being stolen!!

Chapter Three: The Search

I yelled and Winnied as loud as I could but the person wasn't getting distracted. I felt so helpless as I stood there in my stall not being able to do anything about it. I stood there with my head over the door as I watched the person which I could now see that it was a man leading Jade out of her stall and into a small trailer then drive away. I snickered softly as I watched the trailer drive out of sight. What was going to happen to her now? Was she going to be starved or maybe even killed? What were they going to do to her? I felt so helpless because I couldn't help her as she screamed and whinnied and thrashed around in the trailer. I was so worried about what was about to happen to my best friend. The one I grew up with. The next morning the girls woke up to find her gone. They called Police who said that they would start a search on horseback A.S.A.P. They then called the family to let them know what had happened and that the adoption would have to wait. All of the people that worked at the farm tacked up their horses along with Izzy and her mom. Izzy rode on me and we all went out on the dirt roads looking for signs of tire tracks. We did find some but then when we came to the gravel road we lost track. We did this every day going just a little bit further each day. Still nothing. Then one day about three months later we got a call from the police while we were out searching about a horse that was found. It as a black mare with the same descriptions as Jade tied to the back of an old barn. We went to the address and met up with the Police there on horseback. They went to the back of the barn and looked at a picture of the horse from both sides then looked at the horse itself. It was Jade. She was skinny and every bone in her body was protruding out of her. She had scars and bloody cuts from head to toe, signs that she had probably tried to fight back. This was also signs of animal abuse. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. First she was taken away from her mother as a young filly and now this?! She looked so helpless and scared and that she had given up on survival. The Police arrested the man for starving, abusing and beating a horse. Jade was brought back to the farm and was given food and water. They then gave her fluids to hydrate her. Izzy slept with her for the night. We all prayed that she would be ok and would make it through the night.

Chapter Four: Adoption Day

Jade survived that night and when she was almost back to health the family that was going to adopt us a few months ago was now able to come and get us. The family came and got me and Jade in a happy delight that she was ok. Jade and I now still live with the family to this very day and have lived happy and healthy lives. We give the girls horse rides around the yard and let them brush us and braid our manes and tails with pink ribbons. I am truly happy that Jade and I are doing well and that we are now in our forever homes.
