The paramedics had arrived and found Michael in an unnatural heap no one had dared to touch him such was his position in amongst the mail boxes.  There was quite a crowd gathered now and the police were now on the scene and were trying to disburse the onlookers and talking to the truck driver to find out what happened and at the same time trying to identify who the cyclist was.

Stu had left Hayley after hatching their plan to get and her and Michael together, but he was curious to find out where the paramedics had gone so he had followed their general direction and he found them pretty quickly.  Looks like something really serious he thought and then as he got a closer look he realized it was Mike.  Stu lost all of his colour and felt physically sick one of the policemen saw Stu and seeing his reaction turned to Stu and said "come on young man this isn’t really a sight for you to look at", "but, but" stammered Stu that’s my friend Mike.  The police took him to one side and started to take down Michael’s details, whilst a car was dispatched to Michael’s home.  Stu was in shock and it took one of the paramedics quite a while to sort him out whilst the others worked frantically on Michael.

It took a while for the firemen and paramedics to carefully untangle him from the mailboxes and to make sure he was stable before they could transport him to hospital.  Michael was unconscious and not responding very well, but the paramedics managed to stabilize him for transport.  By this time Michael’s parents had arrived.

The police after getting Michael’s details from Stuart arrived at Micheal's homeand informed his parents and they quickly got themselves together and informed Jane to stay with her aunt until they returned.  From the details they had received from the police they didn’t want Jane to see her brother in his present condition it would be too upsetting for her.  Michael’s parents arrived just after he had been freed from the mailboxes they were both shaken when they saw him he didn’t look good, no, not good at all.  Once stabilized which seemed to take an eternity they went to the hospital with him where he was whisked into the emergency department whilst his parents had to wait.  It took a long, long time before anyone came to see them.  The doctor who came to see them informed them of his injuries he had an enormous list of injuries two broken legs, broken ribs, a broken arm, lots of cuts and bruises but most worrying of all was the head injury he had.  How bad was it they asked and were told it’s too early to tell although Michael hadn’t broken his skull his brain was inflamed and swollen and they were keeping a close watch on his progress in case they had to release any pressure from inside his skull.  His mother broke down inconsolably "will he live?" asked his father.  "The signs aren’t that good at the moment I’m afraid to say" replied the doctor "at the moment he’s having difficulty breathing, his vital signs aren’t good and he’s on a life support machine and only time will tell."  Can we see him they asked and they were told yes they could but probably in 30 minutes time as they were still working on him.  That 30 minutes seemed an eternity finally they were allowed to see him.  What a mess he was, he was barely recognizable so many tubes, drips and monitors, his face and body so swollen from his injuries.

His Mom decided to stay with Michael whilst dad went to pick up Jane from her aunts. This was going to be difficult trying to explain to Jane what had happened.   Jane burst into tears really upset had her teasing caused all of this? She wanted to see him, she had to see him, is he okay? It’s all my fault she blurted out.  Her Dad explained as best he could about Michael’s condition only to be greeted by OH MY GOD I’VE KILLED HIM!!  It took some time to calm Jane for she was hysterical blaming herself for what had happened.
