I've pretty much been in denial since that appointment and Vanessa knows it too. Everyday she reminds me that I need to find a way to contact the baby's father and she won't stop pestering me about doing things that will "hurt" the baby. I'm pretty sure sleeping on my side isn't going to flatten the baby's head.
"You need to do more research on pregnancy Lia, you're absolutely clueless!" She told me one day after she snatched a cup of coffee from my hand. Apparently coffee is bad for babies.
Great. I've been living off of coffee since freshman year... of high school! I can't just stop drinking it! I've already began to feel the symptoms of withdrawal bit every time I try to tell Vanessa she ignores me and says I'm being selfish.
Well excuse me for being addicted to caffeine, last I checked she was the one that hooked me on it in the first place!
"Amelia Marie Taylor if you don't find that man right now I will. And you won't like it when I do."
I look up at my best friend in alarm after she drops a thick yellow book in front of me.
"Don't look at me like that. Now find him."
"Vanessa you can't expect me to just fi-"
"I do and you will." She says sternly.
I groan in annoyance as I put down my bowl of cereal and open the book and go to the S section.
"What's his name?" Vanessa asks as she comes over to stand over my shoulder.
"Sebastian." I say as I quietly flip through the book.
"Ooh, he sounds sexy... and foreign."
I smirk. "He is."
After about twenty minutes I finally give up and throw the book aside.
"I'll tell you something else he is... not in this book! I can't find him anywhere!" I exclaim.
"Are you sure?" Vanessa asks as she walks over to me, her Cosmopolitan magazine in her hand. She gave up watching me after three minutes and gave in to her magazines that were "calling" her. Unlike me and the rest of the world, Vanessa is more into magazines then she is Netflix. But I think that has to do with her being a journalist.
"Oh I'm sure. I looked everywhere, he's not here."
"Okay, well then I guess we'll just have to go wherever it is you guys uh, did it. Do you remember where that was?"
"Yeah, but he said he was only here on a business trip so we went to the hotel he was staying at. It's called the Chateau, it's in Manhattan."
"The Chateau? Wow, sexy, foreign and rich! Way to pick 'em girly!" Vanessa exclaims, high fiving me.
" Um, okay? So what's the plan, go to the hotel and demand they give us his information? I'm pretty sure there are laws against that."
"Well then you're lucky the manager owes me a favor. We'll go tomorrow."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Well apparently the favor he owed her wasn't worth him risking his job by digging up information about guests and giving them out to strangers, one of which who happened to be a journalist.
But he did say there was a Sebastian that stayed there in June and that he would give him a call and tell him there was someone looking for him. There was nothing more Vanessa and I could do, we just had to trust that the manager would call Sebastian and give him my contact information.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Almost two weeks have passed since Vanessa's manager friend promised us he would call Sebastian and tell him that I was looking for him. Vanessa even went back and he swore that he called the man and told him. But like I said, it's been almost two weeks and still nothing.
"Maybe he forgot to call?" Vanessa offers during lunch.
Usually she never has time for lunch during busy days like today when she's working a big case but I called her two hours ago freaking about him not calling and she said we should meet for lunch.
"Maybe. Oh my God Vanessa what am I going to do if he doesn't call? I'm going to have to raise this baby on my own! I can't do that! I can barely check to see if a guy is wearing a condom during sex how the hell am I supposed to raise a human being?" I exclaim which makes the couple sitting next to us give us strange looks.
"Calm down, okay. Look, I'm sure he'll call and if he doesn't well, at least you have me! I'll help you raise the baby."
"Vanessa you don't even know how to sweep. How do you expect to change diapers and clean up spills? You can barely get up at seven in the morning how are you going to handle waking up everyday at random times of the night?"
"Oh yeah I didn't think about that. Oh well, I'm sure we'll figure it out. They don't call it Parenting For Dummies for nothing."
Tears prickle my eyes when I hear my phone ring. I quickly grab it from my purse and stare at the caller ID, it's a private caller.
"Who is it?" Vanessa asks.
"I don't know, it's a private number." I say.
"Well answer it." Vanessa urges before shoving a piece of lettuce into her mouth. I roll my eyes and answer the call.
"Hello? Who is this?"
"Sebastian Steele. Who is this?" A deep, masculine voice replies in a British accent.
My eyes widen when I realize who it is.
'what?' Vanessa mouths.
I cover the speaker and whisper, "Sebastian."
Her eyes widen before she indicates for me to put it on speaker. I notice her mouth a 'thank God' as I put it on a speaker and set the phone on the table.
"Hello, is anyone there?"
"Oh yes! Um, my name is Amelia, err, Lia Taylor. We met a couple of months ago at Latex, it's a club in New York." I say, hoping he remembers.
"Ah yes, the girl in the red dress."
"Uh huh." I confirm as my cheeks heat up.
Vanessa smirks at me before continuing to eat her lunch.
"What is it that you want?" He asks, getting straight to the point.
"Well, um I well, I don't think this is something I can discuss over the phone. It would be better done in person, unless it's too much of a hassle for you." I say, biting my lip.
I hear him mumble something to himself and then a bit of shuffling before he replies.
"Well I'm in England right now but I don't move back to New York until Saturday. Is that an alright time for you?"
"It's perfect!" I say, grateful for this.
"Alright where can we meet?"
"Um, there's a bakery across the street from the club if you still remember where that is. I can be there at two?"
"That's fine. Okay, goodbye Amelia."
"Oh um, it's just Li-" I stop talking when I realize he's already hung up. I frown but quickly add his name to my contacts. No way I'm ever losing him.
"Oh my God! You found your baby daddy! I don't have to be a parent anymore! Whoo-hoo!" Vanessa exclaims, bouncing in her seat. She waves the waiter over and orders a bottle of champagne.
"It's time to celebrate!"
I don't say anything as I watch her celebrate with a smile on my face.
I finally have something to be happy about.
