Chapter 6

There they were, standing right in front of me, kissing. My best friend and my boyfriend.

"What the hell?!" I yelled

"Oops, I kissed your boyfriend. Sorry, not" Ashley said

"Why? What did I do? What the hell!?" I yelled as my eyes teared up

"No offense, Vannessa, but I never really liked you. I was only with you to get closer to Ash." Drew said

"Plus you're a total bitch half the time" Ashley added

"Yeah! because of my mom! You of all people, Ashley, know this best!" I yelled and ran off out to the parking lot to my truck and cried. It's painful watching your boyfriend cheat on you, with your best friend.

"First mom, then my brother, now my best friend and my boyfriend. Who's next to leave me?" I asked myself and started crying harder. 

I jerked awake when Levi shook me.I sat up. My face was wet and my pillow was soaked. I was crying in my sleep.

"You okay, Vannessa?" Levi asked

"Yeah, just a bad dream" I told him and rubbed my eyes

"Clearly, you were yelling and crying. I could hear you in my room" Levi said

"Sorry" I said

"It was about Drew and Ashley wasn't it" Levi said and sat on my bed next to me

"How'd you know" I asked

"You said her name and talked about your mom" Levi told me

"Oh" was all I could say

"Yeah, you gonna be okay?"

" Yeah, what time is it?" I asked

"7:30" he told me

"Might as well get up then" I said

"Yeah, do you want food?" Levi asked

"Sure" I told him

"Okay. I'll make a fried egg sandwich thing" he said

"Yours are the best!" I said with a smile. This kid may only be 10 (almost 11) but he could make the best breakfast sandwiches. We walked downstairs and I honestly didn't care what I looked like. My eyes were probably red and puffy and had dark circles under them. Plus my hair was probably a mess, but Levi seen me like this many times so i didn't really care. Until I saw Scotty sitting on the couch in the living room.

"Hey Levi, Hey Vannes- Are you okay?" he asked mid-sentence when he looked at my face.

"Yeah, just a bad dream" I told him

"Yeah, she was screaming and crying" Levi said I gave Levi a "why did you tell him that" look. He just mumbled sorry and walked into the kitchen. I blushed. My face was burning.

"I-uh, um, had a uh flash back" I told Scotty

"Of what?" He asked then said, "Come here and sit"

I sat down on the couch next to him and said, "One of the most painful memories from Minnesota"

"Wanna talk about it?" He asked me

"I don't know" I said honestly and started tearing up again. Scotty pulled me into his lap and let me cry on his shoulder. He hugged me lightly, and I realized how much he's been there for me in the past week and a half.

"Foods ready!" Levi called. I got off of Scotty's lap and we walked to the kitchen.

The three of us just sat at the island on the barstools and ate the sandwiches Levi made.

"Mmmmm, Levi you are the best cook ever!" I said after I took my first bite

"Definitely the best 10 year old cook I've ever met" Scotty said

"Thanks guys" Levi said and we continued to eat.

Around 8:30, Jeff and Chris woke up and Scotty went out to the barn to work. Levi and I got ready for the day then went to the front yard and played catch with a football.

"You okay, Vannessa?" Levi asked after a couple of minutes

"Yeah, just glad I'm here now" I told him

"Me too" he said with a smile, I giggled. "Let's go feed the horses" Levi suggested

"Yeah, sure" I said, honestly I was nervous to go out to the barn and see Scotty. I'm kind of embarrassed after what happened this morning. I didn't want him to see me so broken.

We put the football in Levi's sports bucket and walked the short distance to the horse barn. 

I could see Scotty. He was wearing a simple light blue t-shirt, a pair of old jeans that had a hole on the right knee, and his faded brown cowboy boots. He looked so good in something so simple.
