Will refused to accept what Maddie had said. He just couldn't believe she had really said such a thing. That she had come to such a conclusion as running away.
But part of him knew that she had been right in her reasoning. Will could never understand why Horace and Cassandra were as protective as they were. After all, Will had never had a child. But he could almost sense where they were coming from. As Maddie's godfather, he wanted only the best for her. He wanted her to be safe at all times. But, because he wasn't her real father, and because he led the life of a Ranger, he could accept that Maddie would be endangered several times in her life.
Horace and Cassandra seemed to think they could prevent that by doing exactly what Maddie had claimed; cooping her up in a castle.
And because of the truth in what Maddie had said, Will knew there was a chance she would actually...
No, Will thought. I won't let her. I need to talk to her. Or Horace.
But what would he tell Horace? "Hey! Um, so you're daughter feels crowded and spoiled and she hates it! So she's going to run away! Just a heads up!"
No, he thought. He would just have to talk to Maddie herself. But for now he would wait and keep an eye on Maddie until they headed home. He didn't want to miss anything else she might say.
And so Will watched. And waited.
