Amanda changed out of her wet clothes and towel dried her hair. She sat on the bed and looked at herself in mirror over her dresser.
She looked crazy, she was sure that Eric thought she was certifiable. But, there's no way that she imagined what had happened. There was water on the floor and she was wet, how can she just imagine all that happening?
Sighing, she reluctantly left the room and went to face her husband.
He was waiting in the kitchen dumping chips on his plate.
"Thanks for making me a sandwich on the regular bread, " he said.
So he was going to avoid this...
She nodded and grabbed her sandwich, not really up to eating at this moment, but she knew she had to.
"So what happened at the doctor office today?" he asked.
"What was your news first?" she detoured the question away from her.
"Are you okay?" he counteracted.
"I am Eric, something happened that I can't explain and I guess I can't make you believe what happened was real," she answered.
"I understand, and I believe that you experienced something." he said gently.
She sighed and forced a smile.
"So what is your good news?"
"Well, I got an offer at work today for a new position. It's a great increase in pay, and was offered a bonus," he started.
"That's great honey!!" she jumped up and ran over to him and hugged him.
"Well, there's a catch," he continued.
She brought her head back, arms still locked around his neck and studied his face.
"Its in Virginia."
"Oh..."
"We don't have to go. I know that this house has a lot of memories, and I don't want to make you leave if you don't want to go," he assured her, rubbing his hands up and down her back.
"But, I don't want to make you pass up this opportunity," she sighed.
She unlatched her arms from around him and stepped back.
"I don't know what to do," he said.
"I know that it's a big decision," she said. "How long do you have until you have to give an answer?"
"The position doesn't open for another 4 months, so we have time to think it over. They do want an answer by the end of the month so that if I don't take it, then they can fill it."
She sighed again and sat back down at the table. She looked around the kitchen and wondered if she could give this place up. Letting go of the memories of Jenny running through the living room into the kitchen giggling as she or Eric chased her. Crawling all around the house learning her boundaries and testing her limits. Holding onto surfaces around the living room and practicing her walking and balancing, toddling across the living room on wobbly legs for the first time.
"I don't know Eric..." she said.
"We have time babe, we can weigh our options. What did the doctor say?" he asked, changing the subject.
She scooted her chair closer to him and took his hands in hers.
"I went to get my birth control refilled and my yearly check-up," she began.
"And the doctor told me that I was pregnant."
She could see the fear and excitement come into his face, and could tell he was struggling to smile through it.
"Are you?" he said softly.
Sigh, "I am."
"Do you know how far along you are?" he asked.
"She said that I was three months."
"Three months? That's longer than our other pregnancies," he said.
"I know babe," she said.
He motioned her to stand up, and brought her close to him and put his hands across her belly.
"Do you think?" he started to ask.
" I think we can try this. She said that there are options, knowing about the other pregnancies she mentioned me being on light bed rest, and towards the end, on complete bed rest."
"I know... I am just a little worried," he said.
He was thinking about losing another baby, it seemed to break her spirits each time which is why they decided that she would take birth control.
"What happened with the birth control?" he asked.
"She said that antibiotics can cause the birth control not to work and that's possibly what happened when I was on medication last month," she explained.
He nodded. She sat down in front of her lunch and stared at him.
"We can do this," he said.
She wondered if he was talking about both the baby and the move.
Just then, she felt a sharp pain in her abdomen.
"Ouch," she gasped, bending over and grabbing at the left side of her abdomen.
"Are you okay?" he asked leaning over her.
"I- I think so. I just had this sharp pain all of a sudden. Its gone now, but wow!" she laughed.
"The baby must be letting us know that we can do it too," he grinned, placing his hand over hers.
Amanda looked at their hands over their baby, and looked up into his eyes.
"She's right," she said.
"She huh?" he asked, "what if its a him?"
"It doesn't matter," she told him, "either way I am looking forward to their arrival.
Things seemed to be falling into place. A promotion and a baby!
