Chapter 11 - No More Crossing Boundaries

The story of the scene yesterday night (the whole thing with Ash saving me from the two jocks) had spread rapidly. I was happy things spread so fast at this school for once; I wasn't getting picked on. Sure, people pointed or giggled while they whispered if they saw me, but it wasn't anywhere as bad as getting chased or pushed or stepped on. And no one seemed to bring up the fight Ash and I had that I'd explained to Lucy.

I'd only noticed two groups of kids snickering while I walked past towards Art, which beat my record for 'lowest amount of groups making fun of Kate' of three groups. When I walked into the classroom, a little less than half of the students fell silent. It made something as simple as walking to my seat and sitting so much easier. It didn't feel like I was dragging a bag of bricks everywhere I went.

Next to me, Ash had his feet up on the desk, arms crossed, and eyes shut. For a moment I thought that everyone was being was being quiet about it because he was around. The weight returned, only it was a lighter load. Then I remembered outside. I hadn't been with him, and no one had dared to come up to me. The weight dissolved.

"Hey, Ash," I said. I remembered our talk last night, but tried to shoved it to the back of my mind.

"Hm?" He grunted, not moving.

"I'm sorry," I told him genuinely. "And I would like to start tutoring again."

Ash opened his blue eyes and hesitated.

"I promise I won't go through your computer-or anything else personal," I assured. "I won't even glance at your computer."

Ash tensed, and I didn't want to say anything else stupid so I just shut up.

No more crossing boundaries, I told myself.

Ash glanced over at me and let his feet drop off the desk. "All right, but tonight is the last night in my dorm."

"Okay," I quickly agreed. "Would you rather do the tutoring in my dorm or in the-never mind." I remembered him saying how he didn't want to do the tutoring in the library because he didn't like other people. "My dorm is fine."

" 'Kay," he said. He paused then: "What room?"

I told him.

" 'Kay," Ash said as the bell rang for school to begin.

The tutoring was slightly awkward, but I was relieved it had all been some stupid, evil prank. And that made it less awkward.

"Next," Ash said tersely.

"Number nine," I said. "It's a word problem."

"Do you remember what I said before?"

"Yeah, I need to..."

~

"Next."

"That's all of the problems," I told Ash.

"Then let's do the homework," he replied with a yawn.

"That was the first thing we did," I said pointedly.

"Oh..." He stood up and pulled out his phone. He sent a text then took a step towards the door only to stop. I put my math supplies away. "Kate?"

I slipped the math textbook into my backpack. "Hm?" I walked over to my door to drop my bag next to it and hold it open for him. I waited patiently for an answer from Ash.

Ash walked towards me. "I just...I think you should know the truth."

I stared warily at him and even braced myself to run out of my dorm. "Go on."

"The e-mail wasn't a prank," he revealed, and I froze. "Roger was covering for me. Kellan would've had to, if he had talked to you too." I stepped towards the opened door, but he grabbed my wrist. "I'm not going to hurt you, Kate. You need to know because that e-mail effects you too."

'Bring your little love to Hell...He'll send someone who will bring the human, Rogare, and Faellan back for torture...'

I took one deep, shaky breath in. "Is Rogare Roger and Faellan Kellan?"

"Yes."

I slapped Ash across the face as hard as I could. I was glad human and demon contact was painful. I hoped it hurt extra.

Ash let go of my wrist, his hands flying to his cheek. I spun around to race out only to run into a hard chest. It was Roger, and he seemed a little taller, broader than usual.

Roger walked into my dorm, and Kellan followed. As I stumbled backwards, Kellan shut the door.

"W-what do you want?" I asked, trembling all over, including my voice. "I'll scream!"

Roger raised his hand, and the last thing I heard was Ash's angry cry.
