Chapter 23 - Girl Humans
"You know, you two are getting worse and worse as the years go on," remarked Morbid. On Earth, he was much more open and outspoken. "I don't know if it's your restlessness or what...Well, whatever it is, it is making more, harder work for me!"
Ash pointed a finger at him. "You do want a job, don't you?"
Morbid gulped, knowing very well what happened to useless demons. He nodded, glad he worked in the castle for higher ranking demons instead of doing dirty work or being drafted or trying to possess a disgusting human body.
"Here," grumbled Kellan, passing the clipboard back to Morbid. "We signed the damn papers saying we were the ones who killed Roger-"
"I added a reason for the murder-which I find pointless considering it is considered a demon's nature! Not only that, but it just makes more paper work for me that it totally pointless and useless in the end! Now, this is torture! Anyways, you're punishment can't possibly be any worse than it already is!" exclaimed Morbid and he sarcastically added, "Being locked up in a gigantic castle with servants and food and everything from Hell in your hand! Must be so hard!"
Ash shot daggers at Morbid with his steel blue eyes. "I don't care how far you are from the demon realm, don't push your luck-and don't forget, we always go back."
"Yeah, Morbid." Kellan flicked the demon servant's chest.
Morbid scowled at Kellan. "Fine then. If you don't need me, I can rip up these papers and tell Ravus the truth-that you came here because of the human girl, and that I had to use black magic to clean up your mess!"
"Hey," said Ash, putting a hand between the two, "you're going to have to use black magic again if you don't quit it. No fighting."
Morbid huffed angrily, and Kellan crossed his arms over his puffed-out chest.
"Now, if you'll excuse me-"
"No, Prince Aesc"-Ash scowled and his eyes lit up like a million fireworks exploded in his irises-"I can't allow you to-"
Before Morbid could finish, Kellan wrapped an arm around the servant's neck and put a hand over his mouth.
"I've always wanted to do this," Kellan murmured, nodding encouragingly at Ash.
"Thanks," mumbled Ash, not entirely used to the word exiting his mouth.
Then he raced out of the cafeteria before darting to the wall of the girls' dorm building next to the boys'. A few minutes later, the lunch bell rang. Ash slipped into the shadows of the building, disappearing almost completely except his bright eyes. He dimmed his blue eyes so as to not catch too much attention while being able to keep his demon sight, which was better than a human with 20/20 but nowhere as amazing as an angel's keen sight.
Ash watched students file out from the buildings. It was an whole different feeling watching them instead of being one of them. He almost felt nostalgic, almost wanted to be human for a moment. But he knew that could never happen. It was wishful thinking, the kind of thinking that destroyed not only many humans but also demons.
Ash spotted Kate exit one of the school buildings filled with classrooms, offices, bathrooms, and janitors' closets. Lucy called out to her and Kate slowed as her cousin raced over to her side. Ash had always thought Lucy was on a sugar high considering how bubbly, cheerful, and naïve l she could be.
Kate and Lucy began chatting, and Kate flashed a smile that warmed Ash's cold heart. Kate flicked her red hair over her shoulder. Lucy slowed so she walked behind Kate and began doing her cousins hair.
Girl humans! Ash thought in amusement with a small smile and shake of his head.
Ash heard footsteps approaching from behind, and his world, his happiness, desires and dreams all crumbled. He came crashing back down to reality when Kellan came to his side.
"Hey," murmured Kellan gently, almost in a coaxing manner.
"I know," Ash grumbled. He snarled, "It's time to go."
"Yeah," mumbled Kellan gloomily. He patted one of Ash's stiff shoulders before walking away. "Morbid and I will meet you behind the gym."
Ash waited a moment longer to watch Kate walk towards the cafeteria. He spun around on his toes so hard and so fast it made the grass under his toes tear from the ground. He willed himself to go on, and he did. But he couldn't do it without glancing back just once more.
