They played games a lot. Nina usually won, except in games that required speed. Jack's wife had the advantage of youth, although the disadvantage of motivation. She loved to play with Nina, because she loved Nina, but somehow she always felt like life was constant slow-motion.
Yet in each game, Nina gave Jack's wife playful advice that kept resounding through Jack's wife's mind, even after the game.
In chess, Nina said that you need strategy--you need to be able to anticipate the possible consequences of your move. In poker, Nina advised Jack's wife to not let everyone see what cards she had--to not make her tell so obvious, to not give away her secrets so easily. In Balderdash, Nina taught her to think outside the box, to be creative and unique.But beyond the facade of board games and card games, Nina was teaching Jack's wife something else. She was teaching her important things in life--she was showing her how to succeed.
