I'm nervous as I walk out of my house in a tux. I feel great about myself, but I feel as if no one will understand.
I'm a FTM transgender. I go to school in Wyoming and I am 15 years old. I am about to go to homecoming with my boyfriend Aaron. He doesn't know I'm transgender.
I adjust my binder and get in the car. I feel very handsome and I hope my boyfriend understands.
As I drive I listen to a ton of gay songs. I pass my best friend Alana's house and a few houses up, I stop at Aarons.
Aaron comes out.
"Caroline! Why did you ask to dr-----"
He stops dead in his tracks.
My heart stops.
"Caroline?..... Is that you?"
I nod. At this point my hands are shaking like a maraca in a child's hands.
"Why didn't you tell me?" He asks, kindness in his eyes.
"I was too scared," I say. "Please don't leave....."
"Ca---- what do you want me to call you?" He asks.
"Carson," I say.
"Carson Briggs, I would never leave you, even if you are a guy. You are the one for me. Now let's go to this dance and have some fun!" He says.
I feel a lot of relief.
We get in the car and drive to homecoming, holding hands.
When we get to homecoming it feels like a bloodbath. Everyone is staring at me like it's lunch time.
"WOOOOO CAROLINE'S A TRANNY!" Greg, a jock, yells.
I try my hardest not to cry.
"Stay by me," Aaron says to me.
We walk down into the gym. I'm still absolutely terrified.
When all my friends see me, they gasp.
They all begin to whisper to one another.
I run to the bathroom. But this time I go to the men's room.
When I get in there, a ton of gay boys are in there having LGBT relatable talks.
I'm crying when I burst in.
They all look at me.
"Honey....." Mark, a bisexual says. "Are you okay?"
"No..... Everyone hates me for who I am.... I'm not Caroline. I'm Carson. I was born into the wrong body! I am a boy!" I say.
Mark and Joe comfort me.
"Honey, those anti-LGBT Homophobic assholes are not worth your time. How about we go out and just have fun? Show them who we really are," Mark says.
I decide to go.
Out there we dance and dance. Mark is in a rainbow suit and kisses Damon, a pansexual, in front of all the jocks.
This is so much fun.
Then at the end of the night, it is time for prom king and queen.
"Hello Cheyenne lions!!!" My principal says. "It is time for the prom king and queen!"
Everyone cheers.
"Our prom king is....."
There's a drumroll.
"Aaron Robertson!!!!"
I cheer for my date.
"And the queen is......"
There's dead silence when we see the principal in shock.
"Our other prom king is....."
Everyone is confused. I am too.
"Carson Briggs!!!!"
I'm shocked. It's me.
I run up to the podium to be crowned.
I look at Aaron, who smiles at me.
He did that for me.....
And I will never forget it.
Ever.
