Chapter 4: Heartache

Chapter 4

Kora's POV

It wasn't even a second until we turned on our heels and made a straight run for the door that lead us back into the pack house. We ran never stopping to glance at each other, just straight ahead across the field determined to get there before the pack members do. The second we stood in front of the door we shifted back, our bones popping back into its human place. "Go down there first I'll meet you later." He handed me the key for the cage before i started making my way to the staircase that lead into the darkness of what hell would've felt like.

As soon as i got there i ran to the cage not before realizing that the cards and food that Carter and I have been eating and playing with was still there on the floor. I scrambled to pick up the cards and shoved the remainder of the food into my mouth. I panicked not knowing what to do with the deck of playing cards in my hands, the only solution that came to mind was hiding it in my bra under my scraggly sweatshirt. And so i did it not caring how uncomfortable it felt.

The cage shut closed with a click as the lock went back into place securing the way out. I slid my hands out of the gaps between the bars extremely careful about contact, I hid the key in my slipper under my foot. Thank goodness the key was brass instead of silver like the rest of the cage. Carter was smart for doing that, knowing that i eventually need it. I smiled at the thought of him being there for me even though it's been about 4 days since i met him. What can i say? I love him already.

All i can hope now is that my father doesn't pay me a visit today and see the difference in my appearance. Or worse, he might decide to toss me around like a rag doll and the cards and key might fall out. I stayed quiet, alert and managed to stay calm. I felt the vibrations of the cage and heard everyone laughing, joking, and talking above me as they entered above. Its really interesting how they can't hear me but i can hear them so crystal clear just using my regular hearing.

Footsteps approached down the stairs. It was him, it was the beast coming down to give me my daily beatings. Its been a while since his rough hands have been pounding on slender flesh and meat. I recognized the stench of whisky and cigarettes coming from him entering my sensitive nose i scrunched it up in disgust. The footsteps approached closer. I squint my eyes shut and crossed my fingers, praying that the worst doesn't come today.

"Dad I need to talk to you!" I heard Carter's voice from above the stairs. My father stopped halfway and let out a low but intimidating growl. He turned around and walked back up stomping with each step. I let out a sigh in relief.

Carter's POV

When the pack came crashing into the house loud and noisy, i was found laying on the couch reading a magazine. I got a couple of head bows to show me respect, after all i am the next Alpha to be. I nodded back with a slight smile. I just hope that Kora has gotten into her cage and locked herself back in. I would've gone down to help her but if i was seen walking back up the stairs from the basement, the consequences would be deadly, it doesn't even matter who i was.

I was greeted by my mother. "Hello darling have you managed yourself good when we were gone?". Her breathe smelt of blood and i don't even want to know who's corpse it came from. "Fine." I simply answer. She kept trying to start conversations with me but i kept replying with one word responses. Soon she gave up and told me to be down later for supper.

Why can't she get the message that i don't enjoy her presence around me. I hated her for the nasty way she's been treating Kora. I got up off the couch and searched the house for my girlfriend, who is also my mate. She was one of the strongest Betas in the pack and was required to go to battle, i had a choice on whether i wanted to go or not cause i just got out battle myself. Sucks that i haven't gotten to tell Kora about her yet, but i will later. I'll even bring Tania with me so they can be properly introduced to each other. I checked our room, i checked the kitchen, the gym, everywhere but still no sight of her. I saw my dad walking down to Kora's cage and decided to stop him before he went down any further. I need to get him away from Kora and find out where my mate is.

"Dad I need to talk to you!" I shouted from the doorway. I hear him growl as he made his way up. He was standing face to face with me, his eyes had a shade of hatred to them. "What?" He spat out. "I um...where's Tania?" He was silent for a while, i was losing my patience. I asked again slowly. "Where is TANIA". I clenched my teeth and walked away since he wasn't going to answer. "She got killed by the rivals." He replied with not even a hint of care in his voice. I stopped walking and my mind went completely blank. "What?..." I whispered. I felt my throat being clogged and my eyes getting watery. I lost her...I lost the love of my life. After 2 years of being together, shes gone.

My dad shrugged his shoulders walked away. I wanted to smash everything in my path, i felt fury rise through me. I ran up to my room and into the bathroom and splashed my face with water. My heart burned with pain stabbing me mentally every second i took a breath. I can't imagine being without her. I looked into my mirror as my eyes turned a midnight black, i smashed the mirror with a punch.

Shards of glass stuck to my skin.

Blood gushed out of my knuckles but was soon healed. I couldn't take this right now I jumped through my window, shifted and ran to somewhere i could be alone. The forest where i had met Tania, and the place where i will make her grave. I didn't see her body being carried home either, my guess is that it was lost in battle.
