Looking back on how we began our 'family' bonds, we made up an odd household. Derek had more of a bigger build so he was one of the first chosen among the orphans sent from the city to work in the sails. I was smaller but had a quick mind and nimble fingers so I was sent to the village herbal shop. Marie's younger appearance had the Widow Weaver's favor so she set to work in weaving shop. Though we were separated during the day, when evening came she would seek us out. Eventually, with her constant nagging, we built something like a family; and nightly peace from the day's brutal work.
"Just us two now." Looking towards Derek as he stop singing.
"No." Derek shook his head.
Looking confused "No?"
Eyes pale gray with a hint of green and signs of recent crying, glanced at me.
"Well, I mean that Marie was right." Grinning "Go to Greying tower. At least there you can make a few extra gold."
"You know, I wonder. When you sing, do spirits whisper to you?" Cracking a smile, knowing I too show signs of shedding tears.
"Ha. Ha. Maybe I should say yes to make you scared, Mm?" Derek smiled anyways.
Derek was a Halfling between a elf and human. Though he works the sails, his body is darker and sometimes looked golden color. However even if he hid the points of his ears, his eyes are what gives him away. Each Halfling has unique sets of eyes that change colors depending on emotions. His eyes vary in colors; link green but a few times they can go to golden red. Only close locals would listen to him sing and not fear the superstitious saying that when elves sing 'spirits tell them your secrets.' Although there are people who throw insults and others get violent.
However our actions at trying to cheer ourselves up from this sad event was short lived. For making his way to us was one barking greedy dog and two lackey guards.
"Oi." Breathless and slap his knees from the walk. "Pay up." Sticking his piggy hand out.
Derek glance at me making a 'what?' face.
I shrugged, making the 'I don't know what he is talking about.' face.
Derek made the motion 'oops. too bad, then.'
I cracked which caused me to snort and Derek to snicker.
"Oi! Ya' loons!" The jerk barked. "Pay for yur dead."
"We don't pay you. Scram." Derek made himself bigger.
"She's not buried, Ares." I stood near Derek. I'm sure with Derek being a Halfling and me being a medicine apprentice should be intimating. 'At least I hope...'
Ares spat with disgust. "Ya' burn her. Ugh." Covering his nose. "She poison the air now. Ya' rats are filthy." Waving his hands like it was unfortunate. "But with nothing left of her maybe when she is reborn, she will look more of a women then..."
At the same time I snapped in anger, a wave crashed into the cliff, sending us a shower. I punched with all my strength straight at his face. Watching Ares fall. "Show respect for the dead!" I shouted, breathing heavily in anger.
Ares looked dazed and then touched his bloody nose. "Gut'im."
I was tackled to the ground and getting hit. 'Why did I have to punch? Ouch!' I covered my face as fist were aimed at my face. 'Did the the ground just tremble?' "Stop!" I tried stall the punches to see what was trembling, but with my lack of experience in fights. I got a good hit to my stomach, "Ungh." I curled up and resumed my defenses against the punches. I felt a tremble from the ground. 'Shit the cliff is falling.'
'No. It is not falling.'
'This is gonna suck....wait what?!'
'Are you not a doctor?'
'No, yeah, kinda...the shit. Why am I talking to m....'
'Then use what you know'
I finally got a deep breath through the pain. I punch the lackey side which made him cringe. I took that second to punch his stomach with other hand. As he recoil, I clapped as hard as I could with his head in between and proceed to throw him off. 'I did pretty good.'
"Ugh." I turn in time to witness Derek lifting the guy up and throwing him down. I saw Ares heading towards Derek.
I quickly ran behind Ares who was watching Derek kicking his lackey and squeezed the weak spots between the head and shoulders.
"Ack!" Ares tried to shrink away from the sudden pain but I held on.
Another big wave hit. "Leave us." I growled and shove him.
"Ya' pay for this, Orphan dirt!" Ares spat with a bloody nose as help his fellow lackeys up.
Derek pat my shoulder "Nice move," and then giving me a look "stupid."
"Hey I couldn't help it. I can deal with shit but I won't stand by if it's about Marie. Especially in front of her ...."
"Worry not." Breathing deeply, "I was itching to punch him too but you beat me." Derek pat my shoulder again before walking towards the village.
"Ouch." Shaking my hand. 'Ah, getting this wrapped up is gonna be ...'"shit."
Derek stop and looked back with concerned "What?"
"My owner. He's Ares's uncle." I looked toward the village.
"Swell." Derek starting walking "Hopefully we will beat Ares to your owner before he begins barking."
I look one more time towards what remains of Marie's pyre. "Yeah..." Then I turn to catch up to Derek. "Man I had crazy thoughts when I was fighting."
Derek grin "You mean getting beaten?"
