CHAPTER THREE

ASH'S POV

"Alright! I caught a Kirlia!" Serena exclaimed.

I walked over to her and gave her a high five.

"Congratulations, Serena," Clemont said.

"It's so cute!" Bonnie squealed. "And it looks so pretty when it dances, too!"

Serena called Kirlia back out from its Pokéball. When Kirlia materialised, it jumped on Serena, giving her a big hug.

"I know we'll be great friends, Kirlia," Serena laughed.

I couldn't help but grin. She looked so happy – so naturally, I was happy for her too.

Kirlia and Serena were holding hands and spinning around in circles, laughing.

"It's getting late," Clemont said. "I'll go put Bonnie to bed."

Clemont, Bonnie and the other Pokémon went back up the hill to the tents, while Pikachu and I sat down a few metres away from Serena – watching her dance with Kirlia. Sylveon, Braixen and Pancham had joined in too – it was really something.

Serena noticed I was still watching, and stopped dancing. I saw a blush creep around her cheeks.

"U-um, hi, Ash," she spluttered. "I didn't realise you were still watching."

She was adorable.

"Sorry," I apologised. "If it makes you uncomfortable, I don't have to watch. I just thought that everyone dancing together – including you – looked amazing."

I saw Serena's blush deepen. Why was she getting so flustered? Could it be – that she felt the same way that I did?

I shook my head. No way that could happen – she was way out of my league.

"T-thank you, Ash!" she stuttered. "Um, if you w-want you can stay, I guess."

I shook my head.

"I get the feeling you'd rather be alone," I said in understanding. "It's okay. You spend time with your Pokémon – I can go."

Serena looked at the floor as I turned and walked back up the hill.

"Shame we didn't get to see more, hey," I said to Pikachu. "Oh well. There's always next time." Pikachu nodded.

I crawled into my tent, where Clemont was already asleep. I got changed into my pajamas as quietly as I could, then crawled into my sleeping bag.

Pikachu's ears pricked up.

"What is it, Pikachu?" I whispered. Pikachu pointed outside, and I listened as closely as I could.

In the distance, I could hear Serena humming a song. It sounded familiar somehow – and then it hit me. She was humming Lugia's song! (A/N: if you don't know what this is, search it up on YouTube – it's a really pretty song)

It brought a strange sense of nostalgia, but at the same time, it sounded really beautiful.

I laid my head down on my pillow, closed my eyes, and fell asleep to the sound of Serena humming.
