CHAPTER SEVEN

ASH'S POV

I trudged through the snow, looking down at the ground with my hands in my coat pockets. A million things were running through my mind, but I chose to ignore all of them. It was safer to not feel anything.

I kept walking until I reached the edge of the town, where a thick forest covered in snow awaited me. I entered immediately, not hesitating even for a second.

I walked through the thick piles of snow for what seemed like forever, with no destination in mind. I wasn't paying attention to my surroundings. It was only when I stopped to release Greninja from its Pokéball that I realised that the snow was falling much more heavily now. I shook my head, convinced I'd be fine, and released Greninja.

I walked towards it. We looked each other directly in the eyes.

"Wulfric's words to me... Are they true?" I asked hesitantly. Greninja just looked at me sadly.

"Don't you trust me?" I cried. Greninja shrugged and turned away. That's when I lost it.

"Greninja!" I objected. "I want an answer!"

Silence.

"We've been through everything together," I yelled. "I took care of you when you were a Froakie. I battled alongside you and watched you evolve into Frogadier, and never through any of our wins or losses have you ever ignored me!"

No answer.

"You're just going to give up now? I thought we were a team," I said, tears forming in my eyes. "The one time I need you the most is the time you choose to desert me..."

I still don't receive an answer.

"Fine," I whisper. "If it's going to be this way, then just go."

Greninja turns around, suddenly paying me intense attention.

"You heard me!" I yelled. "Go!"

I threw its Pokéball down on the ground and ran off, tears trickling down my face. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Greninja pick up the Pokéball and walk the opposite way. I ran as fast as I could, just wanting to get as far away from everything as possible.

Eventually, I found a small clearing enveloped by trees, with an overturned log on the ground. I sat down heavily on the log, placing my head in my hands. What had I done?

SERENA'S POV

I finished brushing all of my Pokémon, putting the brush back in my bag. I looked out the window, noticing that the snow was falling much faster and heavier now.

I looked down at my lap, squeezing my hands into fists. I was getting so worried – I was going to go look for him.

I got up, returning my Pokémon to their Pokéballs and pulling on my gloves.

"Ash still hasn't come back," I told Clemont. "I'm going to look for him."

Before Clemont could object again, I ran out of the Pokémon Centre and into the woods.

I ran and ran, weaving around trees and rocks – determined to find Ash. I couldn't bear losing him.

Suddenly, I saw a pair of footprints leading deeper into the forest – although they were fading quickly.
