Dawnkit wriggled under her brother's weight as they slept in the nursery. She grunted and threw him off. He mewled with surprise and was comfortingly licked by Lifeblaze. Another cat padded into the nursery.
"How are the kits?" said the cat.
"They're wonderful Flamestorm!" Lifeblaze purred. They nuzzled each other affectionately. Dawnkit wriggled over to Flamestorm and pawed at his sturdy leg.
"Hello Dawnkit!" Flamestorm greeted. She looked to where the cat's voice was coming from. Then, her eyes lids fluttered open to reveal a flame-colored tom staring down at her. Rays of sunlight peirced through the walls of the nursery.
"H-hello." she replied, taken aback by how big the world was. Dawnkit peered outside of the nursery and saw a grassy clearing filled with other cats.
"You opened your eyes!" Flamestorm gasped.
Lifeblaze purred, "Amber eyes, just like you, Flamestorm" He nodded happily. Dawnkit looked behind her to see her mom and her two siblings. She had her mom's pelt, unlike her brothers who looked more like Flamestorm. Suddenly, Sunkit's eyes flew open and he mewled with surprise. Dawnkit scampered over to him.
"Hi Sunkit!" she greeted. The tom still was adjusting his eyes to the light.
"Hi!" he replied. His eyes were amber, just like hers. Emberkit lay next to Lifeblaze, sleeping.
Dawnkit turned to Lifeblaze. "Why hasn't Emberkit opened his eyes yet?" she asked. Lifeblaze licked the kit's head. "He'll open them eventually." she purred. Dawnkit nodded and turned back to Sunkit.
"Let's explore!" she mewed and bounced out of the nursery, but was stopped by Flamestorm.
"Kits can't leave the nursery." he meowed. Dawnkit and Sunkit mewed in protest. "Well I guess I can take you out to see the camp." he suggested.
"Yes!" Dawnkit and Sunkit squealed in unison. Emberkit's ears twitched and he raised his head, opening his eyes. They were dark green.
"Yay Emberkit can come with us!" Sunkit mewed. Dawnkit nodded in agreement. The large orange tabby hadn't seemed too daunted by opening his eyes. He yawned and padded over to Dawnkit.
"Are we going to leave the nursery?" he mewed excitedly. Flamestorm nodded and slipped out of the nursery, beckoning for the kits to follow. They tumbled after him and landed on the soft grass of the clearing.
"The camp is huge!" Sunkit squealed. The three kits looked around, mesmerized. Flamestorm flicked a ball of moss into the air. It landed on Dawnkit's head and was soon followed with a surprised squeak. She batted it back into the air towards Emberkit. He swatted it and Flamestorm batted it to Sunkit who missed by a whisker length.
"Ha! You lose!" Dawnkit taunted. Sunkit hissed and leaped at Dawnkit. She wriggled under Sunkit's weight. He purred with triumph.
"Who's the loser now?" he mocked. Dawnkit heaved him off and he stepped back. Ravenpaw and Petalpaw padded over to the kits.
"Hi!" Petalpaw greeted. The kits turned to the apprentices.
"Hi!" they squealed in unison. The apprentices exchanged glances then looked to Flamestorm.
"Can we teach them a battle move?" they asked.
"Ok, but make it quick." he replied reluctantly and sat down a fox length away. Dawnkit looked at the apprentices expectantly.
"So here is an easy battle move. Copy what we do." Ravenpaw instructed. He turned to face Petalpaw and readied his stance. He quickly bolted past Petalpaw, raking his paw along her flank. She stumbled to the side and he whipped around. The kits stared at him with awe. I'm going to be like that one day! thought Dawnkit.
"Ok, Dawnkit you can go first. Do the same thing to me." Petalpaw meowed. Dawnkit nodded and stood facing Petalpaw. She dashed out, just like Ravenpaw had and stuck out a paw. She felt it brush against Petalpaw's fur. When she turned around, the apprentices looked at her approvingly.
"Great job! Sunkit, your next." Ravenpaw purred. The orange tom readied himself and dashed out at Petalpaw. He reached up and missed her flank by a whisker length.
He sighed and turned around. "I'll never get it." he mumbled and sat down next to Dawnkit. She licked his ear lightly. "Don't worry, we aren't even apprentices yet."
"I guess." he sighed and watched as Emberkit flexed his claws in front of Petalpaw. He was nearly the size of the young apprentice. He dashed at Petalpaw and swiped her flank. She meowed with surprise at his strength and stumbled backwards.
"Wow, you're a natural fighter!" she praised. Ravenpaw nodded approvingly by her side. Emberkit puffed out his chest proudly.
"Ok time to get some rest. Don't forget, you still have two moons until you three become apprentices." Flamestorm meowed. The three kits whined with protest as they were ushered into the nursery. They curled up next to Lifeblaze and dozed off quickly.
