Sunkit motioned to prod Emberkit awake, but his nest was cold and empty. One moon had passed since Emberkit had been killed. Lifeblaze and Flamestorm figured that Dawnkit and Sunkit hadn't understood, but they did. The days dragged on slower than ever before. Lifeblaze was gone for most of the day, probably searching for any sign of Emberkit. Dawnkit sat up.

"Good morning." she meowed with a yawn. Sunkit nodded in reply. Dawnkit sighed and padded closer to Sunkit. "We can't go on like this."

"I know." Sunkit mewed.

"Emberkit isn't necessarily dead. He might have gotten away." she said hopefully.

"Yeah and since when are badgers friendly." Sunkit retorted.

"I'm just saying that he could still be alive. Now we need to work on becoming the best warriors we can be so we can search for him when we're older. Do you agree?" she asked.

"I guess you're right." Sunkit mewed.

"Now we need to get this off our minds. How about we talk to Ravenpaw and Petalpaw." Dawnkit meowed before padding out of the nursery. Sunkit followed her out. The two apprentices sat waiting for the dawn patrol to gather.

"Hello!" Petalpaw greeted. "Hi!" Dawnkit replied. "Can you show us the hunter's crouch?" she pleaded.

"Not right now, I'm going on patrol. I'll teach you later." she replied. The patrol headed through the fern tunnel. Dawnkit looked back to Sunkit as soon as the patrol was out of sight.

"Any ideas of what to do?" she asked. Sunkit shook his head. A silver tabby was glaring at the kits from the shadows that surrounded camp. She stood up and approached them. Sunkit's fur fluffed up with fear.

"Why hello there little ones." the she cat said calmly. "Do you want to leave camp with me?"

Dawnkit twitched her tail nervously. "Aren't we supposed to stay in camp?" she challenged. The silver tabby smirked. "No one has to know." With that she headed out of camp. Dawnkit and Sunkit exchanged glances and followed her. When they emerged from the tunnel, a beautiful forest dappled with golden sunlight lay in front of them. Sunkit's jaw dropped in astonishment.

"Is this our territory?" Dawnkit gasped. The tabby nodded and started to head deeper into the forest.

"So who are you anyway?" Sunkit asked once he caught up to the silver tabby.

"My name is Ivybreeze." she meowed.

"Where are you taking us?"

"You'll see." Ivybreeze quickened her pace. The two kits were nearly at a run to stay with her.

A flat, rocky clearing unfolded in font of them. "What is this place?" Dawnkit asked.

"It's where we catch voles. They like to hide in the cracks and you two are going to catch one." The kits' eyes lit up with excitement.

"Will you teach us?"

"Yes." Ivybreeze meowed. "Now first you run up to your prey as fast as you can. Then you bite its throat when you can." Dawnkit and Sunkit nodded. "Look, in that crevice. Do you see that movement? Now go and catch it." With that the two kits charged at full speed towards their prey. Dawnkit scooped it out with one paw and jumped back in surprise. An adder hissed in front of them. It snapped fiercely at Sunkit, missing by a whisker length.

"Help!" Dawnkit screeched. She bravely swatted it, but to her disappointment, her claws couldn't pierce its scaly skin. She looked back briefly to see if Ivybreeze was coming to rescue them. Instead, the she cat was sitting calmly, watching the kits being attacked.
