Hello, my name is Spider Monkey. Recently I saw a reblogged tumblr post that challenged the people of the Internet to describe the colour red without using the word "red". After reading one of the most beautiful responses to a creative writing prompt I'd ever read (followed by the "Les Misérables"-associated comment, "now see I would have just said 'the blood of angry men'"), I decided I wanted to do something similar. So I posted the following status on my Facebook Wall:

Writing Challenge: Describe the colour blue without using any of the following words: Blue, ocean, TARDIS, Facebook, Navy, Twitter.

I put up a similar post on my tumblr page, but listing "tumblr" as one of the taboos, as I came to think of them, in lieu of "Twitter". Almost immediately, my Facebook post garnered a few responses, mostly "MySpace" or "Tumblr" or "Pandora logo". Disappointing. Finally, two of my friends, Philip and John, posted the following two responses to the prompt, which elicited claims of plagiarism of Philip's comment on John's part from my sister:

Philip: "Like the feeling one has right before a storm when the breath of rain sings in the wind."

John: "Like a cool rain that brings peace and serenity to the world. (A) rain that washes away the chaos of life and leaves only calm.

After a long discussion and another equally eloquent response from another friend, Kayla, I decided to write my own response to the prompt. I enjoyed writing about blue so much that I resolved to continue with more descriptions to different colours. This is a compilation of all the responses to the colour prompts.

I will continue to post the colour challenges regularly on Facebook and tumblr and give 4 hours before I start writing my own response. If you wish to participate in the colour description challenges, you may find them by following me on my tumblr feed. My URL is prisoner-number-24601 (another "Les Mis" joke). Look for the picture of Jean Valjean with the caption "The Original Boy with the Bread" (fandom crossover).

Thank you for taking time to not only read my essays, but to read through this introduction. If you intend to participate in one of my challenges, thank you for your participation. If you choose to follow me on tumblr, thank you for following me.

May the Force be with you, and may you never again step barefoot on a LEGO.
