Audrey's Death

Chapter 9

Two  minutes had passed. I reluctantly picked up the test and look at the little miniature screen. And just to my luck there were two little pink lines on the test. Fuck. I was pregnant. I began to cry, hot tears rolled down my face. How could we be so stupid? Why couldn’t we just have waited until we had gotten home? Seconds later I heard a soft knock at the bathroom door. Luke peeked his head in to see me crying. 

“Audrey whats wrong?” He exclaimed. I handed him the test and his face became very somber.

“Oh” was all he said. 

We sat there in silence. Comprehending what was going to happen. I was the first one to speak.

“Are we going to lose Merideth’s money?” 

“No. She was a teenage mom too.” He said in a monotone.

I stood up. “Are you fucking kidding me?! Are you serious?” I yelled.

“Why are you mad we still get her money to support ourselves!” Luke whimpered while he sat on the floor.

“Because this is all to perfect! You and this baby and the fact the Merideth will keep supporting us! It’s bull shit! I have had to fought for everything I have ever gotten in my life until now and it isn’t right! Teen pregnancy is hard. It should be hard for us too! we’re teenagers!” I said with streams of tears going down my face.

Luke stood up and wrapped me in his arms, I buried my face in his broad warm shoulder.

“We may only be 18. But if you think about it we were never teenagers. We always took care of ourselves. That’s how it has always been for us. But now I want to take care of you Audrey I want you to be able to want things and not have to yearn for them. I want you to be able to just have them.” He cooed. I smiled and kissed him.

“Thank you.” I whispered. Luke picked me up and carried me back to bed. Everything felt tossed up right now. But I had Luke and everything was going to be fine. I was fine. Aside from the fact I was about to hurl. Damn morning sickness sucks. But I’m okay. I’m going to be okay.

 I had work again today. I put on a brave face and walked my way down to that italian restaurant. 

The day went by well I guess, I don’t know how I got through it really. There was a seafood special that everyone kept ordering and every time I served it I nearly gagged in there food. Lets just say I didn’t make very many tips. My boss sent me home early that day. Montoro was his name. A short fat man with a shiny overcome head. And of course when I got home Merideth was in my apartment making herself comfortable. It was the new normal. She had been dropping in a lot lately.

“Hey.” I said

“Hello darlin how are we doing?” She asked casually

“Feeling a bit under the wheather.” I sighed

“Pregnant?” 

“Excuse me?” I exclaimed

“I saw the test in your bathroom.” She smirked “When are you ever gonna learn that you can’t keep anything from me?” 

“Well, what do you want.” I spit

“Luke called and told me to come down and spend some time with you and I figured that now that I know about your little mis hap that maybe I could tell you my story.” She laughed

“Your story?” I said not trying to sound to curious.

“Yes, you see I was a teen mother too. With a guy who I was seeing before Luke’s grandfather. His name was Joseph, my my was he gorgeous or what! He wasn’t a good man though. some moments he was sweet and treated me right and others he was a pig who yelled at me. But he never actually laid a finger on me. Well on summer just like you I had been feeling really ill and under the whether. Being as sweet and Joseph was he took me over to the doctor who told me I was pregnant. Joseph was sweet and caring but once we got home his whole demeanor changed. He told me that he would kill me if I didn’t get and abortion. After a few months of pretending I had terminated the pregnancy joseph began to notice my body changing size. I though that we would had broken up by then. But one night when we were at the barn yard party with all the other teenagers he made me fess up to him and once I did he hit me. Luke’s grandfather was the one who pulled me from it all. He put me in his truck and took care of my for the rest of his life. I never saw joseph again because of Peter, Luke’s grandfather. He was sweet and he never hurt me. The baby ended up being a still born but then about a year later I got pregnant again and Peter took care of me. He loved me. And Luke loves you so let him help.” 

I grimaced. This woman was all over the place! One moment she is nice and the next she is a total freak show and I don’t see her for a month! I’m sick I’m tired I just want to go to sleep.

“So what are you doing here...” I tried to say as loudly as I could without passing out. I failed miserably and all the came out was a pathetic whisper.

“Just to take you to the OBGYN.” She perked up

“I really just want to sleep. I’m not feeling well.”

“Well than you go lie down and I’ll tell them so come directly here.” 

“I don’t think the so that....” I squinted

“Oh but these people do.”

I sighed and shook my head in disbelief. I don’t care what she does just as long as I get to sleep and she leaves me alone.

 I trudged back to our room and plopped onto the bed, it bouncing in delight. “ugh” I moaned.

 For a while I listened to Merideth putter around the apartment bickering about this and that. And then I just closed my eyes and sleep came over me. I woke up too shadows hovering over me and whispers of “Should we wake her up?” 

I opened my eyes and then squeezed them shut at I swatted and the dark bodies. It was Merideth and the doctor she had called over. 

“Wha ever doc, do your thing.” I muttered with my eyes shut. I felt a pair of warm hands on my lower abdomen prodding around and then they were gone.

“Yes she is definitely pregnant.” He said

“Alright doctor thank you for your time.” Merideth replied. And then that was that. I went back to sleep and Merideth left.

 I woke up a few hours later sweaty and hot. Luke was beside me sound asleep. I wasn’t feeling sick anymore but it was only 3 am and I was wide awake. Maybe I should go for a walk... No no. Stay inside. No. Go outside. I fell back asleep trying to figure out what to do with myself. 

A few minutes later I felt a tap on my shoulder it was Luke.

“Lets have sex.” He moaned half asleep with his eyes clothes. I smiled in the dark and reached for his waist band. There was none. He was making this too easy. He rolled himself on top of me and kissed my neck. Surges of pleasure went down my spine. Suddenly there was a angry knock at the door.  

“You get it.” Luke said

Another set of angry knocks.

“No you get it!” I retorted.

“No seriously Audrey please go get it.” He sighed

I shook my head disappointed and climbed out of bed realizing I was still wearing my server uniform. I walked over to the door and check the peep hole. On the other side of the door was my father. I sprinted back to the bedroom and nearly ran into Luke who was now standing up and wearing shorts.

“Whats wrong?” Luke exclaimed.

“Shut up!” I whispered. My dad is out there!”

Luke nodded and pushed me aside. I ran over to the laundry room and hid inside one of the cabinets and tossed dirty laundry on top of me to cover myself up. It was dark inside the cabinet. All I could here was some soft whispers and then my dad yelling. A smack and then large angry foot steps running around the house. I prayed and prayed that he didn’t find me. And the suddenly he was in the laundry room. I could here his heavy breath outside my cabinet door. One by one he opened them all. He opened my and I became frozen. Oh god I hope my whole body is covered in clothes. Then she shut my door and opened the next door. Suddenly my door swung open again and he grabbed me by my hair, pulling me out I screamed.

“Do you really think I’m stupid enough not to see you in a fucking cabinet? Do you legitimately think i’m that stupid you bitch?”Grant yanked me out of the Laundry room and pulled me up abruptly bruising my ribs. I yelped.

“SHUT UP.” He yelled.

By the door I could see Luke on the ground knocked out cold.
