Kayan was terrified. He growled in his throat and attempted to twist around and bite the man but he couldn’t. Star told him not to fight the men or he’d be punished so he gave up. He allowed his body to go limp. He was brought into a room lit up by a large skylight. It was a large room. The floor and walls were simply white tiles. There were several marble counters, each protruded from the right wall and there was about five metres between each counter. Kayan breathed in and was met with a variety of unfamiliar scents. The man holding him tossed him on the floor against the closest counter and chained him against it. Kayan’s eyes were wide and he was shaking slightly. The man kicked Kayan with his foot towards a metal panel in the floor against the wall. Kayan stepped forward, awkwardly trying to stay balanced with the heavy chain around his throat.
He stepped onto the panel and leapt up when the wall made a beeping noise. A shiny black screen met his eyes as he peered closely at the red numbers that appeared. The man called out that Kayan weighed one hundred and fifty pounds. Kayan was then unchained and half dragged half carried outside. The door led into a small arena. A few people were sitting on the seats and watching. There were five benches each one a step higher than the one before it. They went in a smooth curve around a circular chain link fence. Inside of the fence was the arena. It was covered in white sand and many footprints. Kayan was pushed through a door which slid upwards and closed quickly behind him.
Kayan turned around and attempted to dig out before looking at the far side of the fence. He saw an animal being pushed through and tensed his muscles. He was relieved to see Bell appear through the confined space. She crouched low and her fur stuck high into the air. She let out a loud growl and snarled, bearing her large white teeth. She leapt at the tiger cub but he jumped side-ways just before she reached him. She turned and pounced again. Kayan continued dance away from her. He evaded her easily and began to dart towards her and snap at her heels. After a few moments he had learned her behavioural pattern and could predict what was coming.
She leapt at him pretending to go left but instead went right. Kayan saw the change and managed to escape her with a simple scratch along his left hind leg. Both animals panted staring at each other. Bell jumped at him again. Kayan ducked down and she went straight over him. He took his opportunity and shot onto her back. He raked his claws across her back and soared off of her. Blood soaked her fur. She looked at him in surprise and fury. Just as they were preparing to collide again two men ran in and restrained them both. Bell was taken out and Kayan was left in the arena.
He took his short break to examine his injury. A small amount of blood clung to the surrounding fur but otherwise it was fine. He thanked the Gods that it wasn’t too bad and asked them to forgive him for hurting Bell. He prepared for a fight when he saw them loading another animal. Star leapt out with rage. “How dare you hurt Bell!” he roared with anger at the young tiger. Kayan took a pace backwards. “It wasn’t my fault.” He cried in distress as Star charged at him. He jumped out of the way, knowing that to be caught meant death. Kayan didn’t evade Star, he fled from Star. The muscular wolf was slow and his stiff movements could never catch Kayan’s swift body in a forest. But Kayan had nowhere to run.
Kayan look around with horrendous fear. He prayed softly to Minx and was rewarded with a plan. He stopped suddenly and jumped into the air. Star ran straight past him. Kayan took hold of the fence with his claws and climbed up. The fence was about twelve metres high with a capped roof. Kayan didn’t want to reach the roof so he climbed about nine metres up. The roof was made of the same chain link as the fence. Star stood below Kayan and lunged towards him, always falling very short of his trembling target. In frustration Star turned away, Kayan kicked off the fence and landed on the black wolf’s back. He dug his claws in and bit the back of the wolf’s neck with his sharp pointed teeth. Star bucked him off and just like before the men came and restrained them. This time both of them were taken out of the arena and back into the white room.
