Chapter 2

Kate led me to a spot in the astronomy clubroom where two other girls sat. They both greeted Kate as we sat and one tossed me a piece of caramel. "Momo this is Pam and Taylor. Pam and Taylor meet Momo."

The girl Kate pointed out as Taylor looked at me with a smile. "What a pretty name. It's unique. Don't think I've ever meet someone with the same name."

A smiled formed on my face along with a blush. "Thank you."

"So you're that new girl who got a full scholarship. I can't believe I'm sitting in the same room and having lunch with the smartest girl in the school." Pam said as she pulled open her lunch box and pulled out a sandwich.

I simply nodded to the statement and opened my own lunch box to find my Dad's homemade noodles, a bag of cheese flavored potato chips, a juice box and a container of mysterious dark red liquid. Curious I picked up the container and removed the lid only to shove it back on. The strong sent of garlic overwhelmed my nose as I shoved the thing away.

The three girls looked at me in confusion as I thrusted the red fluid back into the lunch box. "My dad's a chief and he's always making weird things and making me and my mom try them. That must have been an attempt at a garlic and tomato pasta sauce that went wrong. I don't think I want to smell that much garlic ever again."

As soon as I stopped talking the girls erupted into laughter and asked me to hand them the container. Each took turns smelling the concoction only to send each of us into fits of laughter at their faces. When the container returned to my lunch box we continued to giggle about each other's stories about attempting to make simple food for the rest of lunch.

When the bell rang signaling the end of lunch and the warning for fifth hour we each scrambled to pick up our stuff. Pam showed me to the classroom for AP History as her class was the one next to it. I received another textbook and pulled out another notebook to doodle in while the teacher gave lectures.

AP English, German, and PE followed after history and they were followed by the final bell. I existed the changing room and made my way to the locker Kate said was mine. I put in the combination written on the paper with my schedule. As I unpacked my books and notebooks from my backpack Kate, Pam, and Taylor appeared at my locker.

Kate handed me a slip of paper before speaking. "You want to join the astronomy club with us. We could use another member. If you do, get that paper signed and returned to Mr. Bard, he's the club supervisor." She paused to look down at her watch. "Club activities for today were canceled because Mr. Bard has some meeting. You think you could let us show you around the rest of the school and maybe go to that new café on the corner of fifth and maple? It just opened like three days ago and I here it's really popular already."

My eyes got big at the mention of the café. "That's my dad's café. It's the reason we moved here. I didn't know it was already getting so much business. I would love to go see it with you guys." I was happy. My dad worked really hard to get the small building the way he wanted it.

"Really? I didn't know that was your dad's Café. My sister is working as a barista there," Taylor added with excitement at the new development.

Pam adjusted her backpack and pointed down the hall. "You up for that tour?" I simply nodded. All three of them smiled before Kate took my hand and lead me down the hall. She pointed out the classrooms on the second floor and what they were normally used for. We compared schedules as we walked to the stairs to explore the first floor.

While descending the stairs one of my flats came off. As I bent to retrieve it I bumped my head against the railing and took a step back. That was my mistake as I took a step back onto nothing. I stumbled and fell back. I was surprised when I landed on something much softer then the tiled floor that was supposed to be at the bottom of the stairs.
