Chapter 3

In the past two weeks I became an official and dedicated member of the Astronomy Club. They held a party to welcome me and I made a few new friends. I met the head of the club, a guy named Henry who was graduating this year along with his twin sister Margret. The teacher and supervisor was very nice and we all enjoyed hanging out afterschool.

Along with joining the Astronomy club I have spent a lot of time avoiding Lucas. I feared that what my mind had said was true. I can't shake the image from my mind.

We share a Chemistry class and the teacher paired us up for a project. The only talking we have done is suggestions on what we should do and the rest is tense silence. The project was coming along but it was only at the starting phase and according to the teacher it was supposed to take several weeks to finish.

Now back at home we have finally unpacked all of the boxes as of yesterday. As promised I can finally have friends stayed the night. I smiled at my finished bedroom before adjusting my skirt and heading down the stairs. I was successful at descending the stairs but as I crossed through the living room my foot caught under the rug. I fell forward with a loud bang.

With the sound of my fall my mother came rushing into the room. She stopped at the arch and watched as I stood. "I'm aright. I just tripped nothing hurts." I said as I dusted off my uniform. My mother sighed before returning to the kitchen where the sound of the new came from.

I went into the kitchen and looked to the laptop on the counter. A reporter was talking about the recent events in Russia. I frowned at my mother's expression. She was looking intently at the screen and the grip on her mug was scary. The name that read across the screen under the reporter caught my attention. My eyes widened and I looked back at my mother.

"Is that the military team Uncle Mike is on?" I asked and my mother looked at me with eyes that told me the answer. Wasting no time I put my arms around my mom. "I'm sure he's fine. Only a few of the troops are missing and I'm sure we would already know."

My mother ran her hand through my hair and smiled down at me. "You always have a way of looking at things in a brighter way." She kissed my forehead and looked at the clock. "Oh no we got to go or you're going to be late."

In reaction I looked to the clock and hurried for my shoes. I grabbed my bag and coat and ran to the car. My mother followed behind and we got into the car. She drove me to school and dropped me off.

As soon as I arrived I checked my phone for the time to find that I had five minutes to get to my locker and to my first hour class. I shoved my phone back into my pocket and ran into the building. As I turned the corner I slammed into someone heading the opposite direction as me. I paused to apologize only to widen my eyes in surprise.

Before me was Lucas as he bent over to pick up the beanie that fell off when I ran into him. One of his ears was once again revealed as his hair failed to hide it. It was truly pointed and the fears in my head were resurfaced. I stuttered an apology and escaped from the situation.

When I finally made it to the classroom Kate looked at me with a concerned expression. "You look like you've seen a ghost," she exclaimed as I took a seat at my desk.

"I was almost late to class so in my rush I almost fell down the stairs again." I lied hoping she would believe me. She simply shook her head and handed me a cookie that appeared from nowhere. I thanked her and nibbled on the cookie.

A minute into class Lucas showed up and I couldn't help but stare at the spot where his ears where hidden under the hat. As soon as I realized I was staring I quickly looked away.

As I looked away I made eye contact with Kate. She looked at me then in the direction I was staring then back at me. A large smile formed on her face and she gave me a look I didn't understand. "You like him, don't you," she whispered so she didn't disrupt class.

My eyes got wide at the accusation and I immediately denied it but she wasn't having it. Soon she was writing my own future out for me. I rolled my eyes and continued to tell her that I wasn't in love with Lucas but I wasn't getting through.

Kate finally stopped when the teacher yelled at us to stop talking but I knew that wasn't the end of it. Kate was going to tell the others and I would here it during lunch and then club. This misunderstanding was going to last a while.

When Chemistry came around I stood at the lab table looking at the list of what we needed to do. Lucas was already working on something so I needed to pick something. Eventually I did and worked as far away from him as I could. One part of my mind was again trying to find a way that I was just imagining things and the other was coming up with scary thoughts.

I worked on the project hoping to push the fear out of my mind. It lessened as I worked and the time for lunch approached. Still I was scared.

When the warning bell set up to remind us to clean up went off I quickly put away what I was working on. I gathered my stuff and cleaned my workspace before impatiently waiting for the bell to ring. When it did I rushed to my locker to retrieve my lunch and meet the girls in the clubroom.

When I got to the clubroom I realized that I had beat the others there. I moved the star map and broken telescope off the table and carefully onto a chair. I made space for the four of us and our food before sitting down and opening my lunch. Inside was a simple sandwich with lettuce, tomato, peppers, and chicken. Along with the sandwich was a bag of home made sweet potato fries, a milk carton, and a snicker doodle.

As I took a bite of my sandwich the door opened. Taylor and Pam entered the room. They were giggling and holding lunch trays. When they saw me they smiled and hurried to the table.

"You will never guess what happened in our gym class. We played kickball outside and the teacher got hit in the head with the ball. It was so funny." Taylor said as she placed her tray on the table. I laughed with them as they relayed the details of their gym class.

When Kate arrived she burst into the room with her lunch box and quickly apologized about helping the teacher. When we told her it was no problem she sat down at the table and smiled at me. Instantly I rolled my eyes and prepared for what was to come.

Instead of Kate's voice my ears were met with warm voice of Lucas. "Excuse me ladies, can I barrow you friend for a moment." The girls nodded excitedly and I was led out of the room.

When we reached the music room he stopped and motioned me to enter. I entered and tried to keep my fear down. My mind was racing with the possible outcomes of this encounter and when he spoke my heart stopped.

"What have you seen?"
