Chapter 3: Unexpected plans
I could recognize the smell of this place anywhere. I slowly open my eyes. Yup, I’m in a hospital room.
What happened again? Sam beat me. Caiden saved me. I guess that’s why I’m here. I slowly try to sit up. Owwww, my head!
“Oh honey! You’re up! You have stop ending up here.” I see my mother and father with tears in their eyes.
“I…uh…sorry mom.”
“That handsome boy, Caiden told us what happened! Sam always seemed like such a nice boy..”
“Yeah, well he sure as hell isn’t. When am I going home?”
She looked me in the eye and said “Soon, don’t worry. We are going to put a restraining order on Sam.” She was fiddling with her hands and she looked down. I can see how sad she is. She looks disappointed, but why? I looked out the door and saw doctors rushing through the halls with gurneys.
I turn back to my mom and sigh. “Why do you look so disappointed?”
She took a deep breath and looked away, then down. Her eyes are gleaming with tears. I can tell she’s trying to hold them back. “We should have known Sam was like that. Why didn’t we have that instinct feeling? We could have stopped it all!” She let the tears fall and my father rubbed her back.
“Mom, he fooled us all. “ I shook my head. How did Caiden know what was happening? How did he come out and save me just in time? By the way, where is he?
“By the way…where’s Caiden?” He actually saved me. Caiden. And he barely knew me! Huh.
“He’s in the waiting room. I can get him and give you some alone time..”
I felt the blush rise to my cheeks. “i..um..okay..”
They both left. Time to see my savior. I look up at the clock. Hmm..10:00. He has been waiting for me all this time? I suddenly felt butterflies in my stomach. Ah! Go away. I’m done with guys for a while. I no longer trust anyone anymore. I will only trust Dallon. But he left me. I know Emma is my best friend and all but I’m not sure if I trust her completely. You can’t blame me after everything that happened to me. Now I have no one. Perfect.
The door opened and I jerked my head up. Ow.
“Uh hey Caiden…”
“Hi, Arianna.” He smiled sympathetically. He’s wearing the same as earlier. Except now It’s stained with blood. I guess it’s both mine and Sam’s. Just thinking about him makes me shudder.
“Look, Caiden, I’m sorry for bringing you into so much trou-“ He cut me off.
“NO! Don’t even think this is your fault. It’s that moron’s! Not yours whatsoever. Trust me.”
He came over to my hospital bed and took at seat. And my hand. I suddenly had a warm feeling to his touch.
“This wasn’t such a great way to get to know you. Not that I know you well at all. All I know is that you had some idiot of a boyfriend and a tough life and-“ He suddenly stopped when he saw me flinch at his last few words.
“Sorry…I didn’t mean to bring all this up. You must be trying to forget. I just really want to be friends with you. When I first saw you, I knew I did. I just had to try. So I’m trying here. Will you be my friend?” His eyes got big and puppy like and my heart dropped to my stomach.
“Of course. You know you didn’t need to beg. Most people don’t ask for friendship, it just happens.” I pursed my lips and him. For a second, I thought I saw him look down at my lips but hey, my head just got slammed into a locker many times. I’m not surprised if I’m seeing things.
“Oh. I just wanted to make sure. I want to protect you.”
“You just met me. Why do you want to so badly? You don’t even know me.”
“I just have this gut feeling that I absolutely have to. I don’t know why.” He looked thoughtful for a moment. He glanced back at his hand on mine and intertwined them. I don’t know how I felt about this. One part of me was saying yes and one part of me was saying no.
Plus, I just met this guy! But he did save me.
I didn’t know what to say. My eyes just widened as I looked at out intertwined hands.
He instantly realized and quickly removed his grip on me. “Sorry! I don’t know what I was thinking… I uh…”
I just gave him a reassuring small smile. “Don’t sweat it. I’ve been thinking…” My eyes wandered around the room until his eyes met mine. He kept his gaze.
“Go on…” he urged.
“How did you know? I mean after I left the classroom, how did you know to come save me?”
I saw him blush for a moment and he broke our eye contact. “Well after I saw how furious Sam was and saw how badly he treated you, I saw him go after you and I didn’t trust him. He looks like a bad ass and I knew he wouldn’t let you get away with what ever happened to you.”
Oh wow. He really is a nice guy. I smirked and said “So you care? You care about someone you just met? Why?”
He studied my face for a moment and said “I would do it for anyone.”
I don’t know why, but I felt a rush of disappointment. “Oh okay.”
“So what is up with this Sam guy?”
I stood silent. I don’t want to tell him. I just might break down in front of him. Maybe I’ll tell him a different time. I’ll just tell him the basics.
“He is my ex. I just broke up with him very recently after an incident and I saw his true colors. He insists that we are still together forever and ever no matter how many times I deny it. He is a psychopath. He is also way too possessive. “
“What was the incident?” He probed.
“I don’t want to get into this. Maybe I’ll tell you next time. Or at least a different time.”
“Who said there would be a next time for us?” He said with a straight face. If it wasn’t for the glint in his eye, I would have thought he was serious. I rolled my eyes.
“Fine there won’t be.”
He panicked. “NO! It was a joke I never meant that. I was just kidding. Of course I want to see you again and talk to you and just-“
I cut him off with my laugh. “Ha! You’re funny when you get all panicked. Calm yourself. I know you were just kidding. You wise ass.” I winked at him. Woah. Why do I feel so calm and easygoing around him? And I winked? Why am I flirting? I just got out of a bad relationship! I slapped myself in the face. It throbbed, Not the best idea. He eyed me questioningly.
“I saw a bug. And tried to slap it. It got away. Ha.” I looked away and got annoyed at myself.
“A bug? So your first instinct is the slap it to your forehead?” He said looking amused.
“Yeah. Just shut up.”
“Haha. What are you doing tomorrow?”
“What’s it to you?” I demanded.
“I just wanted to hangout. Um, as friends. I want to get to know you.” He flashed a smile I just couldn’t refuse to.
He took my phone from the stand next to me. I tried to get it back but he pulled it out of my reach. “What do you think you’re doing?!”
He smiled and laughed. “Just putting in my number. You can text me and we’ll set up the place and time.”
I shrugged. And he got up, starting to walk away. “Call me. I have to go. Feel better, and stay out of trouble!” He winked.
What am I getting myself into?
