"Stop being such a buzz kill Phoenix!"
"I'm not being a buzz kill, you're just being an idiot."
"No I'm not! This is a great idea! You're just not drunk enough to realize it yet!"
"Isn't that supposed to be a good thing?"
"To your mother it is!"
"Don't even get me started on that uptight bitch!"
"Then come on!"
I followed him up the grassy hill and onto the side of the busy road by his house. I knew this was a bad idea, but I could feel my brain fogging over. Plus, Jason's done this before, I guess I trust him on this one. I don't know yet if that's a bad idea or not.
"Okay, now what you do is that you stand in the middle of the road until a car comes and then when it's close enough, you run to the side of the road as fast as possible." Jason explained, his voice slurring a bit from the 5 beers he's consumed in the past 2 hours.
"What's the point of this again?" I asked as a grey car zoomed past us, making me gulp at the thought of not running out of the way in time.
"Whoever stays the longest and gets out of the way fast enough, wins. So far Jack as the record of the car almost running over his foot!" He answered laughing, probably thinking about the memory of his friend making it out in just enough time. "Okay princess, watch and learn!" He said, kissing my lips before walking out into the middle of the road. He stared down a black ford focus as it zoomed towards him. I covered my eyes as it came just meters in front of him before he darted to the side. He held his stomach as he let out huge fits of laughter. "So much fun!"
"My turn now!" I said, chugging back the rest of my wine cooler. I threw it onto the ground and tried to walk out onto the road.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold your horses. I don't think you're ready for this yet princess." Jason said, pulling me off the gravel..
"Why not? All I have to do is run away from a car, I think I can handle it." I said, hiccupping.
"For one thing, you're hiccupping now. Which you only do when you're completely drunk." He pointed out.
"Do no-" I was cut off from another high pitched "hic" that escaped my mouth.
"My point proven. I however, can handle my alcohol, so I can still do this while slightly thinking straight, which is key. Now let's just go back into the house." He explained, trying to pull me along with him to the house.
"You're just scared that I'm going to beat you, aren't you!" I said, taunting him.
"I just don't want you to get hurt baby." He said, trying to pull me along again. I pulled my hand from his grasp.
"What was the point of showing me this if you were just going to be a party pooper and not let me try it." I huffed, crossing my arms.
"I just wanted to show you how talented your boyfriend is." He said winking and walking towards me again. I just stood there with my arms crossed and my face in a pout. "You're not going to cooperate, are you?" He asked. I nodded my head. "God you're so stubborn." I just smiled big at him.
"Just once!" I said, jumping up and down. He ran a hand over his face and looked at me for a couple seconds before cursing to himself under his breath.
"Fine. Once!" He said running back to the rail. "But only because I want to prove that I can kick your ass at this game.
"Yaay!" I cheered as I ran into the middle of the road. A red truck was making its way towards me at full speed and it wasn't slowing. I wanted to prove to Jason that I could do this, so I stayed standing there, waiting for the truck to get extremely close. When it was about 8 meters away, a surge of adrenaline kicked in and I booked it to the side of the road as the truck whizzed past and down the rest of the street. "How was that?"
"Good for a beginner I guess," He said shrugging and smirking at me.
"More like you know," I said, kissing him softly. I pulled away and grabbed another cooler from the 6 pack of bottles that I brought up the hill with us. I noticed 2 more empty ones by the post that Jason was standing beside.
"Watch this babe! I'm going to beat Jack's record!" He yelled from the middle of the road.
"Be careful!" I yelled. "I don't die on me!" He gave me a thumbs up and kept facing me, not noticing how close the silver car was getting.
"Love you!" Jason yelled from the road.
"Love you too! Pay attention!" I yelled back. The grey car was closer now and Jason should be running soon, but he kept looking at me, and suddenly it all started happening in slow motion.
Jason's head turning as his eyes widened at the machine in front of him. The impact of the car knocked him into the air. I screamed his name as his mangled body bounced off the front of the car and hit the ground. The car stopped and I ran towards him. He wasn't moving and I felt tears rolling down my face already.
"Don't be dead, don't be dead, don't be dead goddamn it!" I mumbled to myself as I lifted his head onto my lap as I sat beside him. "Jason? Jason!" I yelled, hitting his face and doing all that I could as I tried to wake him up. I grew impatient to his answer. I could tell he wasn't okay, his breathing was slowing and he wasn't even trying to move or communicate in anyway. "Jason! Answer me baby!"
He never answered.
