Jared

That was it. I’d lost her. My Saffron was gone. I couldn’t believe it. I thought back to the first day I met her. I just kept thinking back. Losing myself in the memory of her…

Saffron shuffled her feet looking around nervously. This was her third placement. She was twelve now. She was tired of moving around after five agonising years. Her constant mood swings made that impossible. A boy about her age walked into the room. He was being followed by an adult. The head care worker. He didn’t look happy at all. And his expression said that he was neck deep in trouble. The boy stopped and turned around. “Stop following me! I'm not going anywhere. So just relax and leave off!” he sneered. He saw me staring at him. “Had a good look did you, eh?” he took a menacing step forward.

Saffron looked him dead in the eye. She didn’t want to fight him. That was one of the reasons they moved her on so much. She tried with all her might not to retaliate. But it was no use. Her emotions had won.

“Try anything and I’ll slug ya,” Saffron growled. The boy stood there puzzled. He tilted his head to one side. “Not bad,” he grinned. “’Bout time someone stood up to me in this dump.” He held out his hand. “The name’s Jared.”

And that’s how their friendship had started. They had done everything together. They were as thick as thieves. Literally. Though, they had never been caught. Not even once. People had wanted them split up but it never happened.

I blinked a couple of times to focus on what mattered. Carson knew that this was a dangerous task. He hadn’t wanted anyone done in for a very long time. So why now? I got up off my bed and walked out of the room. I ran smack into Lauren.

“Ouch!” she exclaimed. “Jeez, my toe! You weigh a ton Lawson!”

“Well, watch where you’re going next time,” I sneered.

She glared at me. “You’re as mad as hell at something, but don’t you dare take it out on me. Besides, you bumped into me first.”

“Yeah, whatever.” I started to walk away.

Lauren grabbed my wrist pulling me back.

“Sorry that was mean. Can we start over?”

“Lauren, go away and stop bothering me. Please.”

She pouted. “Is that what you like then? Girls that don’t give you the time of day; the ones that play hard to get? Is that it?” she twirled her blonde hair around her finger.

“I haven’t got a clue what you’re on about.”

“Oh, I think you do.” She kissed me full on the mouth.

I didn’t have time to react. Hell, I didn’t even have time to think! The action shocked me completely. And then Saffron appeared out of nowhere. She gasped. I pulled away abruptly. Saffron looked as surprised as I felt. But the expression soon melted into a look of sheer agony and anger. Her navy blue eyes shimmered with unshed tears. She turned and ran.

“Whoops.” Lauren sniggered. “Now where were we?” she took a step closer to me. I back away quickly and glared at her.

“You’re such a bitch Lauren!” I ran after Saffron.

I soon caught up with her. She punched a wall with her fist cursing loudly.

“Saffron, look what you saw there was a-.”

She cut me off.

“Yeah a mistake. I get it. It was just like the huge mistake I made coming after you,” she hissed. She started to walk away. I pulled her back. She slapped me round the face. The sound echoed round the hallway. We both gasped, shocked at what had just happened. My cheek stung. The silence was deafening. I didn’t know what to say to her. I had to apologise or say how I felt or something. Crap…
