Chapter Eight

Gage

Gage groaned after reading the text. He didn't want to get out of bed. He didn't want to see the light of day. His happiness died the day Lexus left.

Cursing under his breath he pulled out his shaver and trimmed his beard. Huh? Imagine that he had a beard! Oh Gage, you've let yourself go man.

Even his eyes seemed devoid of life, his own skin felt foreign to him.

Not wanting to face his mother Gage wrote a note and stuck it on his bedroom door and sneaked out the house. He felt too shaky to drive so he walked a little ways from the house and called a taxi.

"What's the big emergency!" he yelled entering the kitchen of his bakery.

"Oh, um... Well... Uh..."

"Did my mother put you up to this?" Gage narrowed his eyes on his staff.

"No! Um... Well you see..." they all stammered, ums and ohs overlapping each other's as they all tried to say something that would make sense.

"Oh I see alright" Gage snapped.

"We missed the snarling!" the three all said in unison. Gage stared.

"What?" he choked back a laugh? First time in a month he felt like that.

Gage eyed the trio he trusted with his business, his baby. Sandra stared at him, eyes boring into his appearance, flitting over his wrinkled jersey. He held back from sucking his teeth at her when she subtly raised her brows.

Jed, a bear of a man who's as soft and gooey on the inside as a cream filled doughnut and Carissa, the sweetest sales clerk he ever had.

Gage poured himself a cup of coffee and got a fresh cheese roll, with both in hand on his way out the kitchen he glanced at all three who stared back as if he was an alien.

"Well don't just stand there. Get back to work" he snarled, his lips quirked a tiny bit when he saw the smiles on his people's faces.

Guess they did miss snarling Gage.

Taking a seat by the windows Gage slowly ate his roll. He almost choked when he glanced outside and saw Terry... Holding hands, repeat holding hands; with his guy. The boy leaned into Terry's side and said something to him. Gage watched in complete rapture as Terry stopped and laughed. Eyes dancing in amusement, mouth wide open. He saw the moment Terry sobered and looked through the window.

Gage jumped in surprise and ducked a bit, crossing his fingers and hoped like hell Terry didn't notice him. He squeezed his eyes shut and prayed. God, if you love me you'd let them walk on by.

"Hello Gage" Shit!

Gage cursed under his breath and glanced up. Terry was in front of him with his boyfriend fidgeting beside him. The boy looked as if Gage said boo he'd run.

"Terry, guy I don't know" Gage greeted them, a fake smile plastered on his face. It's not like he held a grudge for them or anything. Gage knew that feeling. He saw it. That kind of love. He felt it with Lexus. But it's so hard to smile when you have a broken heart. He was jealous. How come he can't have that?

"How have you been?" Terry asked clumsily. Oh god! This is weird as hell.

"Just sit down guys, no need for this to be awkward.. Well more awkward than it has to be" Gage sighed.

"Oh? Um.. Well ah.. Gage this is Vernon.. Vernon, Gage" Terry gestured and Vernon choked on air when Gage offered his hand to shake.

Looking at Vernon Gage couldn't help but spot the air of innocence that surrounded the boy.
