Hello, my name’s Shane Collins, just your average guy – loves barbeques, addicted to video games – the zombie kind, junk food and great sex with a willing chick once in a while. Maybe even eating barbeque off a chick. Everything about me was and will always be average, well, for a guy that lives in Morganville… Morganville – The land of the dead, literally. I was born and raised in this town, and I’ve hated every second of it. This is my story. It only makes sense to start my story from the moment it all changed, when I began 9th Grade…

I stared up at the huge building before me, another year – the same old struggle. Study, get the grades and stay alive. Nothing changed; nothing would ever change as far as I was concerned.
A group of popular girls shoved past me; Monica, Gina and Jennifer. Monica looked back and scowled, she was the daughter of the mayor, sister of a trainee copper and flawless, but her bitter personality made me want to rip her throat out.
“Watch it Collins,” She hissed bitterly before flipping her hair like a L’Oreal model and walking away as if she were on the catwalk, her side-kicks stumbling in their killer-heels beside her. She may have been half a head shorter than me but she could strike fear into anyone’s hearts, but not mine. I wasn’t scared of some made up, flat chested, teenage girl in a mini skirt.
I rolled my eyes, before walking into the building and towards my locker but the hallway was blocked with swooning girls; all stood around one guy – Michael Glass. His looks bought him popularity; guys clung to him like leeches, waiting for the chance at the babes he had rejected. He didn’t really pay much attention to girls. He was a tall, blonde and played guitar, basically he ticked all the boxes, whereas I had scruffy uncut dark hair, toneless muscles and greasy skin, a complete babe repellent.
I shoved through the crowd, ignored the many insults and opened my locker. I grabbed what I needed for first and second period. I was stopped in my tracks and I looked up from the ground and was greeted by a smiling, bouncing goth-girl.
“Hey there clown-face,” I smirked; she punched me in the arm lightly in return.
“Hello to you too,” She said sarcastically, rolling her heavily made up eyes, her eyes then fixed on Michael and she swooned slightly, she still hadn’t told me she fancied him, but it was totally obvious. I waved a hand in front of her face then she slapped it away “How’s Alyssa?”
“She’s at home,” I said with a straight face “Where it’s safe.”
“She’s never going to learn to survive if you lock her inside, Shane.” She replied with the same facial expression “She’s going to have to face the real world sometime soon.”
“This isn’t the real world,” I said sternly, barging my way past her “And one day, I’m getting out of here, even if it kills me…” I mumbled softly to myself.

After school, I returned home. Alyssa was sat at the dining table studying for a test she’d never have to take; you didn’t need grade to get a job in this hell-hole anyway.
“Hey ‘Lyss,” I ruffled her hair and smiled at my little sister “You know, you’re so boring right?”
“Shut up Shane,” She laughed while fixing her hair. She closed the laptop and turned to face me “How’s Eve?”
“Better,” I replied, Eve had been through a lot of shit at home recently but she laughed away her troubles as usual.
“Have you decided what to get me for my birthday?” She hinted “I got the best present EVER for yours!”
