Normani and I sat on the couch. I was leaned back, while Normani was hunched over on her phone. Our parents had told us to wait in the living room, so that's what we're doing. I looked over at Normani.
"Is that Ally?" I teased, causing her to look up at me with a shy smile on her face.
"Yeah," she nodded. "It is. We have a date tonight." I nodded, not responding.
Seconds later, Derrick and my Mom came down the stairs, both of them smiling. They sat down, and I noticed my Mom playing with her fingers - a nervous habit of hers. But it's then I notice the ring on her finger -
"You're engaged!?" I asked, shocked. My eyes were wide, and my mother smiled at me.
"Yes," she said, nodding. "That's what we wanted to tell you."
"I proposed about a week ago," Derrick told us. "We thought it's about time we told you."
"When's the wedding?" Normani inquired, now leaning back into the couch with her phone away.
Mom and Derrick exchanged a glance, "We're thinking about September." Derrick nodded.
"Cool." I shrugged my shoulders, looking between the two.
"That's it? You two are honestly fine with it?" Derrick asked, and we both nodded. "Huh, I thought it'd be harder than that."
"Me too." My mom muttered.
"I mean, Derrick, I like you, you're nice," I explained. "If you treat my mom with respect, then I'll treat you with respect."
Derrick nodded, "Understood." I then looked over at Normani, who looked at me with a 'I don't care' face.
"Cool, so, I have to go meet Lauren at the park," I said.
---
I walked into the entrance of the park, my hands in my jacket pocket. The park had a small pond in the middle, surrounded by benches and trees. Then off to the left was a big playground for the children or whoever, and to the right were stands for food and drinks.
Lauren said to meet her near the pond, so that's where I was headed. I spotted her sitting down at one of the benches.
I smiled a bit, sitting down next to her, "Hey."
Lauren looked up at me, grinning, "Y/N/N! Hey!" she turned her head, pecking me on the lips.
"My mom is getting married." I said after a moment of silence, looking down at the grass.
"She is? To Derrick?" Lauren asked, knowing that Normani's dad is dating my mom.
I nodded, "Yeah. They're thinking September."
"It's June though," Lauren said. "That's close."
I shrugged, "Oh well. But guess what tomorrow is?" I grinned at her, and Lauren blushed a bit. "You're birthday! Now, what do you want to do tomorrow?"
"Well, my previous birthday was big. Like, really big. The whole school practically came," Lauren told me. "I don't want that. But then again, I don't want it like how it was in middle school. I'd invite people and nobody would show up. Only my family." Lauren frowned a bit, and so did I.
"Oh," I quietly muttered. "Well it won't be big, nor small. How about that?"
"Honestly?" she inquired, and I nodded. "I just want to spend it with you."
We locked eyes, and I felt my heart flutter. I smiled at Lauren, then pressed my lips onto hers. She kissed me back, interwinding our hands.
"Okay," I nodded, resting my forehead against hers. "We can do that then. Indoors or outdoors?"
"I don't know," she mumbled. "I'll let you know when I figure that out."
---
I sat in the booth across from Camila. She was texting on her phone, biting her lip, smiling, and blushing.
"I'm guessing that's Dinah?" I asked, throwing a fry at her to catch her attention. She finished typing something, then put her phone down.
"Yeah," she nodded, then picked up the fry I threw at her. "And don't waste fries. You're lucky this one was on the table." she ate it.
"Okay, I have two things to tell you," I said, and Camila nodded. "Tomorrow is Lauren's birthday. And I'm gonna spend all day with her tomorrow. So, I'm turning my phone off, okay?"
"Ooh, are you two gonna frickle frackle?" Camila teased me, wiggling her eyebrows.
I scoffed, "No - I don't know. And the second thing is, well, my mom is getting married."
Camila's eyes slightly widened, "What? When?"
"September - I think," I told her. "To Normani's dad. Derrick."
"So you two will be step-sisters?" Camila questioned. "Cool. Are you okay with you're mom getting married again?"
I shrugged, "Yeah. I guess. I mean, I haven't had a father figure in my life since I was five. Plus - I barely remember my Dad."
"As long as you're okay with it, then so am I," Camila said. "When's the wedding?"
"September." I responded.
"Is Normani okay with it?" she asked.
I shrugged, "I guess. I don't know. I'll talk to her later about it."
"So what're you and Lauren gonna do?" Camila asked. "If it's not sex then.."
"It's just gonna be the two of us," I said. "And if we're gonna be indoors, I was thinking Netflix with a lot of food and shit. If outdoors, I know a place where we can take a walk."
"Did you get her a birthday present yet."
I froze, my eyes widened, "Shit!"
Camila laughed, "You didn't get her a birthday present? Wow. At least I remembered to get Dinah one."
"God damnit," I cursed. "I'll talk to you later."
Camila simply laughed as I got up, grabbing my jacket and walking out.
