Chapter 1
Sitting inside the small, sleek car I watched the small water dews of outsides rain run across the cold, hard glass. Some people would say that what’s happening to me is an amazing, unique thing. Only, I think that I’m weird. That there is nothing remotely normal about what is happening to me. I mean how could it be? I’m changing from what I know and love to something more alien than human. No one else will be like me, I will be a freak.
I let my fringe fall in front of my eyes, shielding the tears that escaped. I don’t usually cry. It shows too much emotion. Something that I lost when my life was ruined- when I began changing. Why should I show emotion? What’s the point in pretending your happy when all you want to do is crawl into a dark corner and never be seen again? And what’s the point in being sad when people don’t care anymore? So why can’t I be ignorant if it will buy me one more moment of bliss that is much needed in this hollow shell that I’m forced to call myself? I kept my eyes closed, keeping the moisture under my eyelids- where it belonged.
The car drove through narrow bends and steep hills; obviously ‘the school’ had to be in the middle of nowhere. These things valued the seclusion from human society. I laughed in spite of myself. I’ve already chosen to call my home hell before I’ve even seen it. In fact, the location of my new ‘home’ is a secret, one they will not let anyone know except for themselves and the other people who already know about them.
How do I know this? Well, let’s just say my ex-best friend Abigail told me. She had always wanted to change into something ‘awesome’ and nearly had a fit when I told her I was changing. Until she realised it meant that I could never see her again. We spent all night crying and I tried to comfort her by saying how everything would be OK. I was feeding her lies at the time. How could anything about this possibly be ‘OK’?
The car stopped then and the rain had turned to a light drizzle. I staggered ungracefully out of the car while they practically danced out with quick and lithe movements. It made me want to hurl! It was so wrong and unnatural. I must have been pulling a face because the woman who had been sat in the passengers seat gave me a sheepish look and mouthed ‘sorry’ to me. She was very small which is why it was so hard to believe that she’s a protector. A protector is someone whose duty is to protect you from enemies such as humans and sometimes even your own kind while you change. They deal with the safe transportation of us 'things' from human society into their world, a world full of monsters.
I looked down at the floor secretly wondering where we were going. Hard footsteps came close behind me followed by complete darkness and a silky material. I froze with shock before manoeuvring out of the way. I spun around to see the driver, a huge man in a black business suit and sunglasses standing in front of me with a blindfold clutched between his oversized fists. Before even trying to find the scream that was lost somewhere in my throat. The small woman crouched between us with impossible quick movement and hissed at the man.
“Is that really necessary?” Her high pitched voice growled at him venomously, the voice was completely different to the sweet, sugar coated tone she had used with me earlier.
“So, how do you suppose we get her there then?” The man grumbled, backing away slowly while raising his hands defensively. Was he scared of her?
“Your going to blank her anyway, I don’t see the point in making it any worse for her," the woman said flailing her finger at the blindfold violently.
“Fine!” He shouted dropping the blindfold and storming over to me. I felt my heart beat viciously in my ears as I tried to back away from his advancement.
“It’s ok," the petite woman soothed sweetly, “You’ll be safe with us," she cooed to me. I peered over his huge stature shocked by what she said, I mean does he look like he’s going to protect me and keep me safe? More like he’d eat me as a fun sized snack I’m that small compared to him. His hand covered the whole of my forehead effortlessly just as my head exploded. My limbs felt like hosepipes at my side, leaving my whole body numb while my vision became nothing but complete darkness. I was left defenceless as I fell into a dreamless sleep.
