After selling my own designs for almost a year with a Chinese manufacturer, I had been working on an old project and developing it further. I was combining tradtional African prints with Hanbok to create an AfroAsian fusion. I had spent months working out which materials and colour combinations would work together, sewing up samples over and over again. I had shared some of my drawings and the samples to my insta feed for feedback and to pique my followers' interest, little did I know there was a thief watching my progress.
I had received a call earlier that day from Jung Kook as he had seen my work on a display for the upcoming show at Seoul Fashion Week, but under the name Claudia Brown. He told me he had alerted the staff that they had mislabled the work and could prove it, but wanted my permission to share my number and the email with the first lot of drawings I had shared with him six months ago. He had shown them my insta profile and the dates going back two months prior as I waited a few months to get as many trials out of the way as possible before sharing my project.
Claudia was a well known Koreaboo and often claimed she was mixed raced. It was the typical "I'm white, Korean and black" crap that I had seen time and time again. She was naturally almost deathly pale (I had pictures to prove it) but would tan herself to an awkward shade of orawn. She wasn't quite orange nor was she any known shade of brown, just an obvious, awkard blend of the two that wasn't remotely complimentary. She frequented a lot of Kpop groups and had been kicked out of quite a few AMBW groups once she was called out for her fakeness.
I always cringed seeing her posts about fighting for the rights of black women "like herself" and seeing all the romanised Korean that frequently found itself interspersed throughout her posts. I wanted to block her but I was mildly amused at her attempts to belong to other races besides her own and was more than happy to watch her try to defend herself when she was dragged through the hedges of bitch stop appropriating.
After a string of expletives in both Korean and English and threats to skin Claudia alive Jung Kook got me to calm down a little so he could explain the plan to me. Once I gave him the go ahead, he was going to give the show's director, Park Se Jun, my number and the email proof while I gathered my sketches and samples and came over to Korea as the director didn't want to remove my clothes from the show, and insisted that I came over.
I stood gobsmacked for a few minutes, I had just been invited to take part in SFW... It took me some time to remember I was on the phone still and I apologised before saying a quick goodbye to Jung Kook. I had so much packing to do and not enough time. We were a week away from Fashion Week and I would lose a day as Korea are ahead of England.
I sent several digital mock ups and emails to my printer and had to find my portfolio case. I'd have to make do with the A4 one as there was no way I'd be able to travel that far with anything bigger. Most of the clothes in my suitcase were mini and full-sized samples. Only Jung Kook knew about the full sized samples, I only trusted him to see them before I was ready to release them and collect preorders.
I was lucky to find a flight for that evening and fowarded my details to Jung Kook so he could meet me at the airport. He told me he hadn't been able to find a hotel room for me at a reasonable distance to where I needed to be but he just happened to be staying nearby instead of at the dorms like he usually did.
I should have been more suspicious but time was short and I was still angry and upset over my work being stolen. He promised there would be plenty of space for me as well so I agreed and wrote down the details of where I was staying.
