My thoughts are clouding together, like black ink mixing in milk water, starkly contrasting without any clear definition. My head is a jumbled mess and it feels so claustrophobic. I'm clawing to get out but nothing gives. No relief is given and there is no way out. I feel like I will burst and all I can feel is an intense sense of loss. A pair of blue eyes, a smiling face and a mess of brown hair are the only things that make sense in my world that is devoid of colour. The only solid thing in the fluid clouds of my thoughts. The blues meld into steel greys as the thoughts continue to confuse me, not allowing me to think straight. The swirling of the colours becomes rhythmic, as if in tempo with some unheard beat. The voices inside my head morphing from crackles and scratches to groans and screams. The incoherent timbres turning into smooth melodies and suddenly a clear image flies through the grey of my brain.

I'm lying on a bed, the itchy fabric close against my skin and unyielding. My throat is raw and I struggle to swallow back the bile rising in my throat. My head feels fuzzy, and the sounds surrounding me are fading in and out, like they are riding a wave and are moving up and down. My eyes feel heavy and I find it hard to focus on anything.

"You're alright Anna, you're all right." My eyes swivel slowly to a tall man wearing a white mask, staring down at me. He holds up a gleaming needle in his hand, staring me down with his cold, dead eyes. His high, nasally voice piercing my ears.

"James," I mumble. "James."

My hands try to move to my face, to wipe away the tears falling down my cheeks. My limbs feel heavy and the pounding in my head causes the bile to rise again. I stare at the tall man and can see only coldness coming out of him. His white coat pristine, but as my eyes slowly travel down his arm I can see small flecks of blood spattered there. A hacking cough erupts from my mouth, spattering his coat with another fine mist of crimson.

My eyes roll back in my head as I try to contain the feeling of having my head smashed in by a sledgehammer, but I only succeed in making the pain worse. A strangled scream leaves my parched throat, as my back arches upwards refusing to let my pain end me.

"Don't go, James, don't go!" I cry towards the ceiling. The bright lights failing to let me believe that I remain in the room. The bright lights look like stars, and stars mean I'm closer to James.

I cry as the thought of staying here without him falls onto me once again. The feeling of a life of never ending grief and loneliness too much for my subconscious to comprehend.

"It's all right Anna, it's all going to stop. Right now." The gleaming needle makes it's descent towards my skin. I try to scream, struggling against the bonds that bind my arms and legs to the bed. I look up to the bright hospital lights and feel the sharp pain in my neck, my eyes glazing over and the last glimpse I get is of my mother's face. The tears slowly sliding down her cheeks as she looks at her daughter as if she were a stranger.

I'm taken back from this moment and deposited once again into the murky quagmire of my mind.

My eyes open again but in a different place and in a different bed, the sheets soft and comforting. I stifle a giggle that leaves my lips, my small hands grasping at the duvet and tucking it tighter around me. My breathing is coming faster as I listen out for the tell-tale squeak of the floor boards that tell me James is outside. A small bubble of mirth again escapes my lips as I think that he'll never find me.

"Oh, Anna!" I hear a deep voice call as my bedroom door creaks open slowly. I gasp and hold on tighter to my duvet. "Where are you An?" He pads slowly into my room, and I can hear him opening the closet dramatically as if he'll find me in there. I stifle a giggle at how stupid he is, he'll never find me.

"Woah, what was that?" He laughs. All of a sudden he lifts the duvet high above my head.

"There you are! I knew I'd find you my little baby sis." He lifts me up in the air, and flings me over his shoulder, tickling me all the while.

"Let's play again James!" I giggle as he puts me down on my bed again laughing with me. "I'm sure I'll hide somewhere you'll never find me. Let's go to the fairy woods!" I squeal jumping up and down.

"Alright let's go there." He says.

We run across the field and reach the den in what feels like seconds. We jump over the stream and splash each other, laughing. I climb a tree and jump from a branch straight into the strong arms of James before I scramble out of them and run towards our special place. I reach it and turn back looking for James as he catches up.

He's out of breath and his face is a pale white. I glance at the forest around us and feel like a million pairs of eyes are watching us. A stinging mist travels through the trees, making me cough and my eyes water. James carries on walking towards me, but the closer he comes the harder I cough. Out of the corner of my eye I see a blazing orange light flare up into the sky, as all the trees catch fire and a raging inferno surrounds my brother and I. He stops in front of me, close enough for me to see every detail of his face, but too far to jump into his arms.

"I have to go now An," He says over the roar of the fire sweeping around us. "I love you baby sis." He takes another step towards me, but a huge crack echoes in the air around us. James looks shocked as his hand comes up to his heart and comes away bright red. He starts choking and falls to the ground vomiting blood.

"JAMES!" I scream. "JAMES DON'T LEAVE ME!"

I crash to the floor beside him and grab his face between my chubby hands. Except they are now growing longer, the hands of a child turning into that of an adult. The short hair curled around my face growing longer until it grazes the small of back.

"James," I sob, stroking his cheek. "James."
