I wake up on my bed, with Anna curled up next to me. I don't know what came over us last night, but a small smile creeps onto my face at the memory of kissing her. It's what I've wanted for ages but I have always been too scared to do it. Scared she might reject me for all I've done. All too soon, this peaceful moment is broken my the buzzing of my phone on my bedside table.
"I wonder who that is," I sigh to myself.
I switch on the screen and read 'It's time'.
Butterflies start beating heavily inside my stomach as I crawl out of bed and pad quietly over to my duffel bag in my closet. I take out the bottle that Cass gave me and pour some of the liquid on a wadge of cotton. The bitter smell catches in my throat and I'm abruptly brought back to my first night at the facility. Grimacing I put the bottle away and move slowly towards Anna. I press the cotton to her nose and mouth. She thrashes around as her eyes flicker open, but I manage to hold her still until her body sags against the bed again.
I text Alto. 'Ready when you are.'
A wave of guilt washes over me as I wait for the familiar sound of the black sedan to pull up outside our house. I look out the window and see Alto wave for me to come down. I grab Anna's bag and mine, before picking her up and cradling her in my arms. I slowly move downstairs, and prize the front door open, without making a sound. I make my way down the drive and reach the front gate, with Alto leaning against it. He notices me coming and laughs.
"You did it. I thought I was gonna have to come up there and do it myself!" He chuckles, moving to take Anna from me.
"Don't touch her," I grit out.
"All right all right, chill out sparky," He grumbles, turning around and making his way to the car.
I place Anna in the back seats and carefully secure her in. I chuck our bags in the boot and make my way to the passenger door.
"Drive," I mumble, suddenly feeling that this decision wasn't Jim's finest.
