"Emma will get over it."

Riley and I were listening to Brooke's little rant, until we noticed the garage lights go on.

"It's not like Will's gonna hook up with Nina again," she continued, rolling her eyes.

Riley caught her attention. "Wait. Is your dad home." She gestured towards the garage, which was lighted. Brooke sighed and the lights flickered off.

"I told people the garage was off limits!" She huffed.

All of a sudden, a loud crash came from the house. Brooke spun around angrily.

"Ev, could you please go tell whoever the hell is in there to get out," Brooke asked.

If Brooke wasn't one of my best friends, and if I hadn't been to her lake house at least a million times before, I would've said no. There was a killer on the loose, and I was a huge insomniac.

I bravely forced a smile on my face, "Sure."

She smiled and turned to go inside while mouthing "Thank you"

I looked to Riley and smiled. "Be right back."

-

Walking into the dark garage, I was greeted by the sound of one of her father's three Porsches going off.

I rolled my eyes, "Hello?"

Nothing.

I sighed and turned to the light switch. It wouldn't turn on.

I rolled my eyes once again and walked towards the open car, my heels clicking against the ground loudly.

"Look, whoever's in here. You need to get out right now."

I stopped in my tracks when I could see nobody was sitting in the car. Placing my hand on the open door, I looked around the sports car to see if anyone was there. No one. I got inside and turned the car off.

I heaved a sigh of relief. Getting out of the car, I was once again stopped by the sound of a blade rubbing against something.

This time, not as bitchy as before I asked, "Hello?"

Nothing.

I practically speed walked out of the garage. Almost positive the person who slit Nina's throat was about to slit mine.

Whipping my head around quickly to see if anyone was behind me, two strong arms wrapped around my shoulders. I gasped and turned to see it was only Will.

"Hey! What're you doing?" He asked.

I was breathing hard. "Some - someone's in here."

"What?"

He reached over to the light switch and flicked it on.

"There's no one in here now."

I shook my head in disbelief.

He gently started rubbing my arm. "Are you okay?"

I looked at the ground.

"It's ok. Just breathe."

"Evelina?"

I looked up. "Yeah?"

His expression turned cold. "If you ever let your friend get in between Emma and me like that again," he was staring into my eyes. Hard.

"I will break you."

I shrugged my shoulder out of his grasp and turned away from him.

Then he walked out, and left me in the garage.

-

"Yo, kiss him, Emma! Breathalyzer!"

I smacked my twin brother, hard, across the head. He was too wasted to care.

"Jake, shut up!" Emma hissed.

Riley pushed his shoulder. "He could've died!"

All I could do was roll my eyes. I couldn't say I was surprised with my brother.

"Hey! He was the first one to pass out," he objected.

I put a hand on his shoulder and he looked at me, smirking. "Just stop," I mouthed.

Jake and his friends thought it would be funny to put Noah on a raft in the middle of the lake.

"What was that, that grabbed me?" The poor kid asked through pants.

"Nobody grabbed you, you spaz! We just dropped you off!" Jake rolled his eyes.

"You were stuck on fishing line," Emma said pulling it off his feet.

"It didn't feel like fishing line," Noah said shivering, "it felt like someone was pulling me down."

I remembered Noah telling me today that Wren Lake was where Brandon James had been killed. I felt a chill go up my spine.

Just then, the infamous Audrey came running to the shore. "Noah? Noah?"

She knelt down to help her friend. "Oh my god," she mumbled rolling her eyes.

"Thank you for the invite, your friends are great."

She stormed off with her friend wrapped in a towel.

Jake watched them go.

I rolled my eyes at him for what seemed like the hundredth time today. "Come on," I said grabbing his shoulder, "We're going home."

I smiled to myself as he objected and said bye to all the girls, telling them to "call him" the whole way to the car.

"You know, Evie," I rolled my eyes at the nickname he only used when we were alone. "I never really wanted to do that," I looked over. He was drunk, so he probably wouldn't remember this, but he never lied when he was drunk. This was the time when all his secrets came out. To me, at least.

"What is that, Jake?" I asked keeping my eyes ahead at the red light in front of us.

"I didn't wanna put that kid on the raft. That's such a dick move!" My eyes widened.

"I only did it to impress everyone," he continued.

I looked at him sympathetically. He was always doing this. Doing stupid things to impress the other kids at school. Unfortunately, none of them knew the Jake I knew - the real Jake. In reality, he was just a big, overprotective, goof that loved driving his huge - ass pickup and singing country music.

I sighed. "Jake, you don't have to do that."

He opened one eye and looked at me. "Really?"

I laughed quietly. "Yes really, you big goof!"

He smiled, and hit my arm playfully. "Hey! I'm not a goof!"

I smiled, "Oh boy, you have no idea."

I looked over to see his reaction, but he was already passed out in the passenger seat.

I sighed and smiled to myself. "What the hell am I gonna do with you?"
