"If I were her, I would just transfer."
Last night, a video of Emma and Will's first time was sent to the entire school. I was now walking down the halls, arm linked with the embarrassed girl. I pulled my friend closer to me.
A girl stepped in front of us and sneered, "Sexy time!"
I squinted my eyes. "Really, Cassidy? Just because it's never going to happen to you, doesn't mean you have to be rude."
The girls smirk quickly fell, and she stormed off with her head down.
"Nice one, Ev!" Brooke applauded me.
She high-fived me before Emma's name was called by a familiar voice from behind us.
"Em!" I turned around to see a frantic looking Will speed-walking towards us. "Em! Please."
Emma stopped in her tracks, and angrily turned around.
"Why didn't you call me back?"
Emma sent daggers with her eyes at him. "Seriously?" She hissed.
Brooke and I gave eachother looks. This was out cue to leave.
Brooke grabbed me by the hand and led me down the hall. I turned around and saw a confused and gave her a sympathetic smile. "See you in math, Em!" I called from halfway down the hall.
I turned back to Brooke and she rolled her eyes.
"Talk about relationship problems."
-
"Are you kidding me?"
I looked up from my phone. Some girl was sitting in Riley's seat. Brooke was not happy about it, and neither was I.
"You got a problem?"
Brooke narrowed her eyes. "Yeah I do."
"That's Riley's seat," I hissed.
The girl rolled her eyes and started to get her stuff.
Brooke continued to glare at her, "Forever."
"Dumb bitch," I muttered under my breath, loud enough for Brooke to hear. "You got that right," she replied.
Mr. Branson cleared his throat. "Okay, everybody." He sighed, "We are still reeling from Riley's death, but we do have learning to do."
"Noah, I know you two were scene partners."
The nerdy boy uncomfortably shifted in his seat. "Uh, yeah, I think I'm just gonna sit this one out. If that's ok."
"I understand, that's fine. We will resume our scene work next week."
I felt a little better about having Will as my partner after our encounter at the coffee shop.
Mr. Branson walked over to the blackboard. "Let's get back to Hawthorne."
Jake tapped me on the shoulder from his seat behind mine. My dark brown hair whipped around as I turned to see his best "this is the most boring class ever please shoot me" look. I laughed softly.
"The Scarlet Letter. It's a classic tale of hypocrisy, misogyny, and female oppression."
Jakes hand raised in the air. "Mr. Branson, seriously, with a all the cyber-bullying and GIFs and mayhem going down ... Who cares?"
"Actually, Jake it's very relevant - "
All of a sudden, it sounded as if everybody's phone had chimed at the same time. Mr. Branson went on, but no one payed attention. I glanced around the room, and it seemed as though that really had happened. Everyone was looking down at their phones, and, by the looks on their faces, it was something hilarious.
"See, the birth of Hester Prynne's illegitimate child led to her being essentially outed and cyber-bullied, Puritan style."
I picked up my phone and quickly took a look at the screen. It was a GIF of the video everyone had already seen. The video of Will and Emma.
Emma and Will
Fastest gun in Lakewood ;)I immediately slammed my phone onto my thigh. I didn't want to see it.
Phones continued to chime and people continued to whisper and giggle. I turned to see what Jake thought of the whole situation, expecting him to be laughing or making some dumbass comments to Will. However, I was proud to see that he, too, had put his phone away and seemed to be intrigued by Mr. Branson's lecture.
"It just takes nine months instead of nine seconds," Kieran added, not paying attention to the situation at hand, but at the teacher.
A boy named Colin, who was sitting behind Will, leaned forward in his seat and shoved his phone in front of him. "Or, uh, three minutes, right?"
I jumped in my own skin when the impact of Will's hand against his desk rang through my ears. "Shut the hell up!"
"Will, stop!" Emma pleaded. "It's enough."
Even Mr. Branson was in on the drama now. "Will, back off." He narrowed his eyes at the angry boy. "Sit down." Will reluctantly listened, and slowly sat back down.
The teacher gave Emma a concerned look, "Emma, are you okay?"
"No. I'm not okay."
I gave my friend a sympathetic look.
"I know that our thoughts are all with the friends that we've lost. And so I just wanted to remind everyone that there is a candlelight vigil downtown tonight at 7:00."
Brooke and I glanced at each other.
"And I hope that all of you will make it."
